Southeastern Region XI Professional Development Course
“Ethics and the Engineer”

May 22, 2004
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
Engineering Math and Computer Science (EMCS) Building
Room 422
(Northwest corner of Palmetto and Vine Streets, Chattanooga, TN)

A four-hour workshop for all engineers, the class explores basic concepts of ethics and how they apply to the engineering profession. A video presentation of a case study is examined that generates interactive discussions of the kinds of ethical dilemmas than can occur during an engineer's professional life.

At the conclusion of the workshop, each student will be able to use an engineering code of ethics as a guide to ethical decision making. Each student will:

1) Analyze situations, which require ethical decision-making.
2) Identify factors leading to a question of ethical choice.
3) Apply an engineering code of ethics as a guide to an ethical decision.
4) Apply general tests to validate the ethical decision.

This workshop is conducted in a luncheon format.

 Improve the ASME

ASME'S Member Initiative System encourages any member or operating unit of ASME to propose improvements to Society policy or procedure or to make any suggestions that would improve the operation or activities of the Society. It's easier than ever to propose improvements and to view proposals submitted by your peers.

To date, there have been 13 proposals submitted, on topics such as "ASME and Iraq Reconstruction" and "Committee on the International System of Units".. To view the current year's initiatives, as well as ASME's responses, visit the Member Initiative System web page at http://www.asme.org/cma/mis.cfm.
