OCTOBER MEETING
Presentation by Dr. Robert Strattan, “The Evolution of Hybrid-Electric Vehicles into the MarketPlace”
Hybrid-electric automobiles are becoming common on our streets and most manufactures are promising more and improved products in the near future. Toyota and Honda have been selling gasoline-electric hybrid passenger cars for a decade with over a million on the road in the United States. Ford and General Motors also have several hybrid models on the market. Alternate fuels, including electricity, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel and natural gas are getting more attention and use. The all-electric car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell is often suggested as the car of the future.
The primary motivations for adopting these new technologies are the more efficient use our finite energy resources and the reduction of the automobile’s impact on the environment. This presentation will describe in simple terms the features and operating characteristics of these new vehicles, discuss the recent trends in hybrids coming to the marketplace and some of the trends in using renewable fuels. This update of a similar presentation 4 years ago will focus on the developments that have occurred as the technology has matured and is moving into the mainstream of the marketplace. The University of Tulsa student’s experiences in designing, building and competing with 4 generations of HEVs over the past 15 years will be described also.
