Robert O. Woods (R.O.W) Grant Awarded!
In 2007, ASME-NM awarded Cynthia Hufstodt-Bruner with a $3000 grant to perform
a science experiment with her middle school class. Cynthia and her 2009 class
of students will be finishing the experiment this spring. We have invited
Cynthia to the June 19, 2009 NM Society of Professional Engineers annual
luncheon to present the results of her classes' experiment. The 2009 R.O.W.
grant winners were Sondra Lawson (Jimmy Carter Middle School) and PG Pullano (Madison
Middle School).
Lego Competition: In March 2009,
Michelle Freeman from Wilson Middle School in Albuquerque accepted a check for
$470 from ASME-NM to fund the purchase of a LEGO robotics kit. The kit will be
used by students to build a robot that they can enter into this years LEGO
robot competition. We'll update the section as to how Wilson Middle School did
after the competition.
Science Fair: On Friday, March 20, ASME-NM member Red Jones
participated in the annual Albuquerque science fair. He evaluated all of the
engineering related experiments and chose a winner from that group to be
presented with a $50 cash prize from the section. The title of the winning
experiment was "Design and Use of an Impact Response Device to Access
Structural Integrity". The presentation of the prize will take place
pending the release of the students name from the science fair organizers. We
hope to officially make the presentation at the NM Society of Professional
Engineers annual luncheon on June 19, 2009. This announcement will be updated
as we get more information.
