Presentation Description
These are all terms that we have all heard applied to the evaluation of in-service process equipment. There are often misunderstandings regarding the goals of these activities and the methodologies that are to be applied. These activities require quite a different approach by both the engineer and the NDE technician. The information required by the engineer to perform the required (by Codes and Standards) calculations is significantly different from that required to certify new equipment. Unfortunately, many clients do not realize that a different approach is needed, and they will issue an NDE contract with not enough guidance – especially in the acceptance criteria applied. The result of this inadvertence is that the client complains of getting a "raw data dump" – lots of data, but no information. The engineer does not get the data required to perform Code calculations and the NDE effort is wasted. In this discussion, Mr. Breen will present an overview of the various techniques employed and he will discuss in detail the special needs for specific NDE data. About the Speaker John Breen is Senior Engineer specializing in pressurized process equipment and piping. He is a member of ASME and is past Professional Development Chair for ASME Region V. He has over thirty-eight years of industry engineering experience. He is principally involved in the design, analysis, and fitness for service of pressure system equipment (vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, etc.), piping systems and hangers, and other process equipment. John is recognized as one of the foremost process, utility, and high energy piping system experts in the country. He has expert capabilities in performing computerized piping stress analysis with most of the popular analytical software and is equally adept at using popular pressure vessel analysis software. He is also highly knowledgeable in the requirements and applications of appropriate NDE techniques and methodologies for in-service inspection, and in the evaluation and interpretation of NDE data. John is certified as ASNT level II in VY, MT, PT, UT, and UTT.

Volunteers Needed For The Future City Competition January 26, 2002 The Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP) is sponsoring the 3rd annual Pittsburgh Regional Future City Competition. This year's competition will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2002, at PNC Park (Home Plate Club and banquet facilities) from 8:00 AM until approximately noon. We are looking for volunteers for judges, timekeepers, model movers, and general help to work the event. Last year, over 40 different organizations and societies provided the approximately 90 volunteers, judges, and engineer-mentors that gave of their time to this fantastic project. As a judge, you will be to be part of a five member panel. Each panel will listen to a five to seven minute presentation by the student teams, ask the students questions, and examine their 30" X 60" model. Each judge will individually score the presentation and the model on a preprint scoresheet. The whole judging process for one student team will take about 25 minutes. The judges will be assigned to a new panel for each student team. In this manner, each panel will be different. We will need six or seven judging "sessions", and six to eight student teams will be judged simultaneously. Therefore, we need 30 to 40 judges. To be a judge, you will need to attend a brief (1 hour) orientation session. Judges Orientations will be held : * 5:30 pm on Wednesday, January 16, 2002 at The Engineers' Society of Western PA * 9:30 am on Saturday, January 19, 2002 at The Carnegie Science Center * 11:00 am on Thursday, January 24, 2002 at The Carnegie Science Center (You need only attend one session.) Timekeepers, model movers, and general helpers do not need to attend an orientation before competition day. If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, please contact Darrell Rapp at 412-577-2658 and rappd@ctc.com. To sign up, you may contact Janet Henke at the Carnegie Science Center at 412-237-1640. You may also email Janet at henkej@csc.clpgh.org. Thank you! Carl W. Schwartz
