ASME PGH Announces 2003-2004 Officers The ASME Pittsburgh Section is proud to announce the incoming officers for the July 2003-June 2004 Session. Congratulations to all! Chair - Jeffrey Vipperman, Ph.D A special thanks to those officers who served during the 2002-2003 Session. For more information on the Executive Committee visit our Committee page.
A Message from the Chair Dear members, Another year is upon us and that means monthly executive committee meetings to plan programs and events for the year. First up for this Fall, we will be bringing you our annual Joint professional/student meeting on September 23. On October 8, we will jointly conduct a plant tour of Accutrex with the American Society of Quality. We are especially pleased to bring you our Novermber program celebrating 100 years of flight. Dr. Rubin Battino, Emeritus professor at Wright State University, will present a talk entitled: "The Genius of the Wright Brothers and the Construction of an Accurate Full-scale Replica of the 1903 Flyer." Dr. Battino has chronicled many pictures, movies, facts, and figures about the life of the Wright brothers and created an immensely interesting multimedia presentation that will be presented jointly with ESWP. He also co-directed and participated in the construction of an authentic replica of the Wright flyer, which now hangs in the library of Wright State University. Also on the agenda are professional development activities, including a joint seminar with Algor in November and we will man a booth at the first annual Greater Pittsburgh Engineering & Industrial Exposition on October 28 and 29 of 2003. We also have plans to modernize our communications by implementing a fully electronic newsletter in 2004. As printing and postage costs continue to rise, we have less money to spend on programs and activities such as Future Cities competitions and the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Throughout the year, we will be inviting you to get more involved with your local section. We welcome your participation in activities as well as your feedback and hope that you find this a rewarding year. With Best Regards, Jeff Vipperman, Chair
September Event:
Event Description Join us for an evening of conversation, networking, mentoring, and pizza. This is an opportunity for students and experienced engineers to mingle. The format will be similar to past years with interest tables set up in the following categories: Design and Manufacturing, Sales & Marketing, Graduate School, Analysis, Project Engineering, Management, Non-traditional use of a BSME (e.g. Patent Law). This is the chance for experienced mechanical engineers, both practicing in the field of engineering, and those that have used their engineering degree to lead them to another career, to impart pearls of wisdon to the next generation of mechanical engineers. It also serves as a forum for students to ask questions to practicing engineers and learn about the various career options in mechanical engineering.
CMU Offers Seminar Series Carnegie Mellon Department of Mechanical Engineering is offering the Distinguishing Seminar Series for Fall '03. Exciting topics include: "Why There Is No Perfect Design", "A Theory of Complexity and Applications", and “Observations of New Particle Formation and Growth Rates in the Atmosphere”. Visit this link to read about each presentation. For more information, contact: Lauren Blair

November Event: The Genius of the Wright Brothers and the Construction of an Accurate Full-Scale Replica of the 1903 Flyer
Program Description About the Speaker Along with professional machinists H.R. DuFour and J.D. Aerhart, Dr. Battino has edited a book entitled An Oral History of Charles E. Taylor, the Wright Brothers' Mechanician. The book is derived from interviews with people who knew or were related to Taylor, the man who built the Wright Brothers' engines. The research Battino did for this book and his long tenure at Wright State University have made him knowledgeable about the history of early flight, especially those aspects centering on the Wright Brothers. More information is available at www.rubinbattino.com.

Voices of Innovation A new daily public radio program, "Voices of Innovation," launched by the American Association of Engineering Societies with generous support from ASME, features some 200 engineers in 2-minute programs that explore and celebrate the world of engineering. The program began airing in April 2002. To be considered for one of the programs, engineers need to submit a story idea form, which is available at www.voicesofinnovation.org.
E-Mentoring Program to Expand to Young Engineers The success of last year's program and the enthusiastic response of members wanting to become mentors has fueled the expansion of the e-Mentoring program. This program for student members is expanding to include mentoring services for engineers who have recently (5 years or less) graduated from engineering school. Young engineers can now benefit from the career advice of more seasoned engineers in their particular field of interest. Recent graduates may get even more benefit from a mentoring relationship, since they have some experience and may have more specific career questions. How does the program work? Students and young engineers (mentees) seeking a mentor choose from a database of names, which gives information about the mentor's background, experience and engineering specialty. Mentees are then asked to fill out an online application indicating their top three choices for mentors. The mentor requests are evaluated by ASME and matched on a first come, first served basis. Only members are eligible to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. Anyone wishing to find a mentor or to volunteer to become a mentor for a student or young engineer member should visit the website at www.asme.org/ementoring. Volunteers can choose to mentor a student, a young engineer or both. Questions about the program should be addressed to Deidra Hackley, at hackleyd@asme.org.
