Program Description:

We would like to invite you to attend TriMech Solutions SolidWorks 2005 Hands-on Workshop at the Trimech Pittsburgh office.

SolidWorks 3D modeling software offers the most advanced innovations available to help manufacturing companies collapse their engineering processes while closely integrating it with the sales and manufacturing sides of the business. You should attend this session if you are
· Frustrated with the level of productivity you are experiencing on your current system
· Concerned with how fast you are getting your products to market
· Disappointed with your organization's ability to design a highly complex product
· Confused on how to convert 2D designs to 3D models easily

And with SolidWorks software, you'll discover ways to share and collaborate on product designs, share data with users of other CAD solutions, integrate with add-on solutions- everything you need to save time and become more productive. Plus, with familiar Windows features like drag-and-drop, point-and-click, and cut-and-paste, you'll find SolidWorks a snap to learn and use.

See for yourself why SolidWorks is the standard in powerful 3D modeling software.

Message From The Chair

Dear Members,

During the summer, the Executive Committee has been meeting to plan the activities for the coming year. This year, things got started a month early with a joint activity with IEEE in August. Dr. Ron Hira, Ph.D., P.E. from the Rochester Institute of Technology, discussed Offshore Outsourcing and Engineering Employment. In September we have planned a tour to the Packaging Corp of America. PCA is a world-class manufacturer of containerboard and corrugated packaging, located in the Strip District. The October meeting is our annual Student Mixer. We usually like to have members in various fields of employment: design, sales, education, management, from small start-ups and large companies, to attend and interact with the students. The students ask a lot of questions and we treat with pizza. In November we are planning an ASME distinguished lecture by Dr Steven Nichols from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Nichols supports the commercialization of the knowledge base of The University of Texas at Austin and supervises the activities of the Office of Technology Licensing and Intellectual Property. His talk is on Technology Commercialization, Entrepreneurship and Professional Responsibility.Moving into next year, we plan to support the Future Cities Competition in January, National Engineers Week in February as well as the Science Fair and the Rube Goldberg Contest. Many of these events need volunteers to judge the students, or to participate in activities with the students. Over the past couple of years we built speed racers out of pop cans, rubber bands and a pipe cleaner for the Engineers week activity.

We are always looking for a good tour or a subject that interests the membership. We are also hoping to have a couple of Professional Development courses this year; have any suggested topics? As always we invite you to participate, through suggestions, by getting involved in the executive committee and/or by attending the events.

Hope to see you, best regards

Doug Koebler, Chair

Future City Mentors Needed !

The Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP) in conjunction with the Carnegie Science Center will present the 6th Annual Future City Competition in the Pittsburgh area. It is a national program sponsored by the engineering community to promote technological literacy and engineering to middle school students. The Competition asks middle school students to create their city on computer using SimCity 3000, build a 3-D model of the city, and write an essay - all in the hopes of winning the regional competition in January and an all-expense-paid trip to the National Finals in Washington, D.C. in February.

In 2004, more than 30,000 students from 1,100 schools in 33 regions participated in Future City, the largest engineering education program in the country. Our own Pittsburgh regional team from Riverview Junior/Senior High School, mentored by Bill Brooks of Brooks Fire Protection Engineering, captured the 2004 National championship! More volunteer engineer mentors are needed for this fun, worthwhile program. Each volunteer engineer mentor works with seventh and eighth-graders, in a team of three students, and their teacher, helping to guide the youngsters through the rigors of building a functioning city. Engineers generally devote only 20 - 40 hours to the project over the period from October to January. Part time mentors are also needed. This year's Pittsburgh Regional Competition will be held at the Carnegie Music Hall on Saturday, January 15, 2005.

For more information on volunteering as an engineer mentor for the 2005 Future City Competition, please contact Werner Loehlein, Pittsburgh Future City Mentor Coordinator, loehlein@usace.army.mil (412-395-7363) or visit our website at futurecitypittsburgh.org.

A study by researchers at the Univ. of Missouri-Columbia has found that the U.S. tax structure and other non-technical barriers effectively prevent bringing alternative fuel technologies to market. Click HERE to learn more.

Brainteasers !

A monthly mechanical engineering problem to test your knowledge or try your luck. A new problem every month. The possibilities are endless - kinematics, fluid mechanics, physics......! You never know what we'll throw at you next!

This month's problem (something different):

A bomber is flying at a constant horizontal velocity of 240 miles per hour at an elevation of 10,000 feet toward a point directly above it's target. At what angle of sight should the bomb be released to strike the target ?

Solution and a new problem next month. Have fun!

Voices of Innovation

A new daily public radio program, "Voices of Innovation," launched by the American Association of Engineering Societies with generous support from ASME, features some 200 engineers in 2-minute programs that explore and celebrate the world of engineering. The program began airing in April 2002. To be considered for one of the programs, engineers need to submit a story idea form, which is available at www.voicesofinnovation.org.

E-Mentoring Program to Expand to Young Engineers

The success of last year's program and the enthusiastic response of members wanting to become mentors has fueled the expansion of the e-Mentoring program. This program for student members is expanding to include mentoring services for engineers who have recently (5 years or less) graduated from engineering school. Young engineers can now benefit from the career advice of more seasoned engineers in their particular field of interest. Recent graduates may get even more benefit from a mentoring relationship, since they have some experience and may have more specific career questions.

How does the program work? Students and young engineers (mentees) seeking a mentor choose from a database of names, which gives information about the mentor's background, experience and engineering specialty. Mentees are then asked to fill out an online application indicating their top three choices for mentors. The mentor requests are evaluated by ASME and matched on a first come, first served basis. Only members are eligible to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. Anyone wishing to find a mentor or to volunteer to become a mentor for a student or young engineer member should visit the website at www.asme.org/ementoring. Volunteers can choose to mentor a student, a young engineer or both.

Questions about the program should be addressed to Deidra Hackley, at hackleyd@asme.org.
