FIRST Robotics Pittsburgh Regional Competition

No Experience Necessary!! The Pittsburgh Regional Competition is in need of volunteers to participate in competition roles ranging from Pit Administration and Robot Inspection to Crowd Control and Safety Enforcement.

You can volunteer for one day or all three! To learn more about this exciting opportunity, see this flyer for the event.

FIRST is a competition to build a remote control robot and compete against other teams. The design objective this year is to pick up tetrahedrons and place them on goals as other teams try to do the same. The students really get to see engineering in action, it's a great activity. We are looking for volunteers to help with the regional FIRST competition. The event will be held on, March 10, 11, and 12, 2005. This is the regional event, held at the Petersen Events Center. There are 31 teams in this competition. ASME is a national sponsor of the event, hope you can help.

Here is a picture of the Taylor Allderdice robot, for the FIRST competition. [robot]

For more information, please contact: Michael Crane, Volunteer Coordinator Mentor at: cranehouse@rcn.com or visit: www.usfirst.org or: www.pghfirst.org .

Program Description:

This session will provide the attendees with immediately applicable tools and practices designed to facilitate organization-wide acceptance of change initiatives. Too often managers (particularly technically-focused managers) spend too much time on the technical details of a large-scale project, and not enough on the common "human" aspects. Unfortunately, this is where most changes fail, at great cost to well-meaning and dedicated individuals responsible for introducing the change.

This session will discuss a practical model for engaging support for change and a range of directly-applicable tools, and review some real-world case studies. It is based on a book by the same name written by the presenter and published by Quality Press.

This presentation has received international acclaim. Don't miss a hands-on, real-world program with immediate practical applications.

Brien Palmer is a Managing Partner of InterLINK Management Consulting (www.InterLINKBusiness.com). He has 25 years of experience helping clients achieve significant performance gains in a variety of business settings, including manufacturing, public utilities, construction, and the service industries. He is Chair of the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Society for Quality (www. ASQPGH.org), and president and co-founder of CoREM, the Council on Realizing Excellence in Management (www.CoREM.org).

Program Description

The ASME Region V Regional Student Conference will be held at West Virginia University on March 31-April 2, 2005. In preparation for this, we are giving students from universities in the Pittsburgh Section the opportunity to make presentations at a "mini" RSC. This can include presentations either oral presentations (http://www.asme.org/cma/og/oralprescontest.html) or poster presentations (http://www.asme.org/cma/og/techposter.html). This meeting is a great opportunity for interaction between the senior section and the student sections, as well as a chance for the student presenters to receive feedback to improve their presentations before the competition.

Poster presentations will be available for viewing during the social hour and oral presentations will be given during the 7:30 p.m. program.

We can also organize a brief tour of the Rapp Center for Technology Development on the Geneva campus for those interested.

Brainteasers !

A monthly mechanical engineering problem to test your knowledge or try your luck. A new problem every month. The possibilities are endless - kinematics, fluid mechanics, physics......! You never know what we'll throw at you next!

This month's problem (something different):

A bomber is flying at a constant horizontal velocity of 240 miles per hour at an elevation of 10,000 feet toward a point directly above it's target. At what angle of sight should the bomb be released to strike the target ?

Solution and a new problem next month. Have fun!

E-Mentoring Program to Expand to Young Engineers

The success of last year's program and the enthusiastic response of members wanting to become mentors has fueled the expansion of the e-Mentoring program. This program for student members is expanding to include mentoring services for engineers who have recently (5 years or less) graduated from engineering school. Young engineers can now benefit from the career advice of more seasoned engineers in their particular field of interest. Recent graduates may get even more benefit from a mentoring relationship, since they have some experience and may have more specific career questions.

How does the program work? Students and young engineers (mentees) seeking a mentor choose from a database of names, which gives information about the mentor's background, experience and engineering specialty. Mentees are then asked to fill out an online application indicating their top three choices for mentors. The mentor requests are evaluated by ASME and matched on a first come, first served basis. Only members are eligible to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. Anyone wishing to find a mentor or to volunteer to become a mentor for a student or young engineer member should visit the website at www.asme.org/ementoring. Volunteers can choose to mentor a student, a young engineer or both.

Questions about the program should be addressed to Deidra Hackley, at hackleyd@asme.org.
