February 16th Event - MAGLEV Tour
Program Description: The MAGLEV, Inc. 1905 Technology Center located in McKeesport is the research and development center for the Pennsylvania Project. The goals of MAGLEV, Inc. are: These two goals are complementary since the construction of a high-speed maglev system requires advanced fabrication procedures that go beyond the current capabilities of manufacturing in the U.S. MAGLEV, Inc. has done more than any other U.S. maglev project to develop the necessary manufacturing and production processes associated with construction of a high-speed maglev. The construction of a maglev system requires fabrication at a high level of precision for the mass production one of a kind products. This can only be achieved through processes that utilize computer aided robotic technology in paperless production environment. In the effort to develop a regional manufacturing base MAGLEV, Inc. has
received a grant from the Department of Labor to pilot their Precision
Fabrication Technology training program. The program is a cooperative
effort between MAGLEV, Inc., Community College of Allegheny County, Penn
State McKeesport, and the Institute for Career Development. This program
seeks to train workers at all levels and at various points along their
career paths by including: The Associate Degree program is a cooperative effort by MAGLEV, Inc. and the Engineering Technology department at CCAC South. Students in the program study their first three semesters at CCAC South and then move to MAGLEV, Inc. to complete their fourth semester. As students go through this program they are introduced to the world of engineering. The Precision Fabrication Technology program is currently working on articulation agreements for students to transfer directly into a BS program and potentially into post-graduate study. The core of the training curriculum is the fourth semester of the Associate Degree program. This fourth semester is comprised of six classes that focus on the precision fabrication technology that MAGLEV, Inc. is developing. From these six classes, worker training certificate courses are being developed (20 to 40 hours) that individuals in the workforce can use to increase their existing skills. The students that are part of the Engineering undergraduate program intern for two years at MAGLEV, Inc. and complete selected certificate courses.
February Event - Introduction to Home Brewing
Program Description: Once the prohibition against homebrewing was lifted in 1979 engineers and scientists began taking up this hobby in large numbers. Combining personal interest and technical know-how they enjoy developing new processes and equipment and enjoying the fruits of their labor. Join us as veteran home brewer Craig Reeder of Step One Systems presents an introduction to the basics of home brewing. This presentation will discuss the basics of the art, the brewing process, basic equipment requirements, sanitation and the development of a passion for brewing and the basement brewery.

ALGOR Announces Expansion Plan and Future Hiring PITTSBURGH, PA - January 3, 2006 - ALGOR, Inc. announced that it has hired the architectural firm of Next Architecture to expand its O'Hara Township world headquarters to accommodate additional staffing planned this year. The expansion will take place in phases, beginning with upgrades to the existing facility. The construction firm of A. Martini & Co., Inc. has been selected to perform the work in the first phase. The company is planning to complete the expansion, which will provide about 50 percent more working space, by the end of 2006. According to CEO Michael Bussler, "We are hiring for both our ALGOR engineering software company and our Inecom Entertainment Company." Both are divisions of the parent company - ALGOR, Inc. "Overall corporate growth was over 12 percent last year and we anticipate even higher for 2006," said Bussler. Bussler added, "To respond to emerging global opportunities for our core engineering software, which is used by both the largest companies and the smallest firms to speed up their product design process while improving quality and lowering costs, we are hiring in several areas. These areas include sales, marketing and software development. "Geographically, we are expanding our software operation into the Pacific Rim for the first time and we are strengthening our existing European connections. Additionally, we are seeing an increase in demand for our engineering products domestically. "Another factor which will fuel growth in 2006 is FEMPRO, a new product being launched at this time, which will enable ALGOR software to add value to engineering software produced by competing companies. "At the Inecom division, where sales have increased by fifty percent in 2005, we are hiring to expand our marketing reach. Additionally, we are seeking third-party partners to augment our captive production capacity and produce more titles to feed our expanding network of retail partners. These partners include Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Borders, Amazon.com, Wal-Mart, Target and more. "An important factor in the growth of the entertainment division was the September release of the Gene Wilder-narrated EXPO - Magic of the White City. This product exceeded our initial sales forecasts and we expect it to continue to do well. "Planned releases for 2006 include Horses of Gettysburg, which is narrated by Ronald F. Maxwell, director of the very successful Gods and Generals. Mr. Maxwell also appears in a 25-minute on-screen interview about filmmaking. In addition, we plan to release a significant feature documentary in November, Minutes of World War I. Another project in the works involves utilization of footage from the making of Gods and Generals under license from Turner Enterprises, Inc.," concluded Bussler. To accommodate growth in both divisions, ALGOR plans to hire additional staffing for its infrastructure, including its information technology department. In addition, the company plans to begin selling computer software that it has developed for image processing and Internet web page development. Voices of Innovation A new daily public radio program, "Voices of Innovation," launched by the American Association of Engineering Societies with generous support from ASME, features some 200 engineers in 2-minute programs that explore and celebrate the world of engineering. The program began airing in April 2002. To be considered for one of the programs, engineers need to submit a story idea form, which is available at www.voicesofinnovation.org.
E-Mentoring Program to Expand to Young Engineers The success of last year's program and the enthusiastic response of members wanting to become mentors has fueled the expansion of the e-Mentoring program. This program for student members is expanding to include mentoring services for engineers who have recently (5 years or less) graduated from engineering school. Young engineers can now benefit from the career advice of more seasoned engineers in their particular field of interest. Recent graduates may get even more benefit from a mentoring relationship, since they have some experience and may have more specific career questions. How does the program work? Students and young engineers (mentees) seeking a mentor choose from a database of names, which gives information about the mentor's background, experience and engineering specialty. Mentees are then asked to fill out an online application indicating their top three choices for mentors. The mentor requests are evaluated by ASME and matched on a first come, first served basis. Only members are eligible to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. Anyone wishing to find a mentor or to volunteer to become a mentor for a student or young engineer member should visit the website at www.asme.org/ementoring. Volunteers can choose to mentor a student, a young engineer or both. Questions about the program should be addressed to Deidra Hackley, at hackleyd@asme.org.
Nominations Needed for Young Engineers Award ASME International wants to give $5,000 plus a prepaid life membership to a young ASME member that has done an outstanding job in their profession, community, and the work of ASME. If you know someone who deserves to win this award, please nominate a young engineer for the Old Guard Young Engineers Award today! For more information, visit http://www.asme.org/cma/og/youngengineer.html .
