Message From The Chair

Dear Members,

I am pleased to inform you of a very exciting and busy line-up of events for the coming year. We will be having multiple tours, professional development programs, and plan to continue supporting traditional events such as Rube Goldberg Competition, Future Cities Competition, and National Engineers Week. With the upcoming year, I have several items, which I would like to share with you.

First, as you know, we are part of the new ASME. ASME operated under counsels, which were dissolved and new sectors were created incorporating components of the councils. All local Sections were affected by the new structure, and we are now under the Knowledge and Community Sector. One of many changes for the Sections is financial appropriation. Support will now be awarded to Sections that provide programs, activities, and other initiatives in support of their members. Your support and attendance ensures that we can acquire funds to provide you with the best programs and activities.

Second, a very important initiative that we are undertaking is to establish an Industry Relations Committee that is intended to be very engaged with companies and industries throughout the Section. One of the primary functions of this committee is to work with companies who support their employees as members of ASME, and for those companies to let us know specifically what professional development or training we can provide to their employees. This in turn provides a more valuable employee receiving special knowledge and thus improves their bottom line.

We also hope to extend these programs and tours out to the counties and communities further away from the immediate Pittsburgh area. Our Section covers eleven counties and has over fifteen hundred members. We are very interested in coming to your area for an event. Please share with us your suggestions for programs or tours in your community.

Third, I would like to invite you to become more involved with our Section by joining us on the Executive Committee. We are always looking for new individuals with unique abilities and insight to help us with our efforts. All of our events need volunteers and your individual contributions are immeasurable. I would especially like to direct this invitation to those recent graduates and early-career engineers. One of the greatest, and transferable skills, is leadership. Joining our Section is a fantastic opportunity to gain that experience and expand your sphere of influence and create synergy working with others.

Finally, I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to our Past Chair Lori Rankin and all of the Executive Committee for doing such a fine job with everything that it took to make the past year a success. I look forward to continued success with this exceptional group of individuals.

In the coming months I will be discussing the above items in-depth. Throughout the year, we will be inviting you to get more involved with your local section, and encourage your participation in activities as well as your feedback. We hope that you find this an enjoyable and rewarding year with the Pittsburgh Section.

Sincerely,
Rich Horne, Chair

Conemaugh Plant - Operated by Reliant Energy

"The Conemaugh plant, located approximately 80 miles east of Pittsburgh near Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was recently named to the top ten list of best performing plants in America by Electric Light & Power magazine. It is one of the largest merchant coal-fired generating plants in Pennsylvania.

Conemaugh is a scrubbed, coal-fired electric generating station featuring supercritical boilers that total 1,700 megawatts and four diesel units with a total generating capacity of 12 megawatts. The facility is located in Indiana County near New Florence, Pennsylvania. It is jointly owned by a group of eight co-owners. Reliant Energy has a 16 percent interest in Conemaugh and operates the facility for the owners group.

Since the units were commissioned in the spring of 1970 and 1971, a number of emission control upgrades have been made. These include a balanced draft conversion, modifications to the electrostatic precipitators, conversion to a digital control system, installation of low nitrogen oxide burners to reduce NOx emissions and the installation of a wet flue gas desulfurization scrubber in the Fall of 1994 and 1995 to reduce sulfur dioxide and mercury emissions.

Brainteasers !

A monthly mechanical engineering problem to test your knowledge or try your luck. A new problem every month. The possibilities are endless - kinematics, fluid mechanics, physics......! You never know what we'll throw at you next!

This month's problem: (something easy)

A 2" length of steel bar is elongated to a length of 2.010" at which time the diameter changed from 0.5050" to 0.5042". Calculate Poisson's Ratio of this material.

Solution and a new problem next month. Have fun!

Voices of Innovation

A new daily public radio program, "Voices of Innovation," launched by the American Association of Engineering Societies with generous support from ASME, features some 200 engineers in 2-minute programs that explore and celebrate the world of engineering. The program began airing in April 2002. To be considered for one of the programs, engineers need to submit a story idea form, which is available at www.voicesofinnovation.org.

E-Mentoring Program to Expand to Young Engineers

The success of last year's program and the enthusiastic response of members wanting to become mentors has fueled the expansion of the e-Mentoring program. This program for student members is expanding to include mentoring services for engineers who have recently (5 years or less) graduated from engineering school. Young engineers can now benefit from the career advice of more seasoned engineers in their particular field of interest. Recent graduates may get even more benefit from a mentoring relationship, since they have some experience and may have more specific career questions.

How does the program work? Students and young engineers (mentees) seeking a mentor choose from a database of names, which gives information about the mentor's background, experience and engineering specialty. Mentees are then asked to fill out an online application indicating their top three choices for mentors. The mentor requests are evaluated by ASME and matched on a first come, first served basis. Only members are eligible to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. Anyone wishing to find a mentor or to volunteer to become a mentor for a student or young engineer member should visit the website at www.asme.org/ementoring. Volunteers can choose to mentor a student, a young engineer or both.

Questions about the program should be addressed to Deidra Hackley, at hackleyd@asme.org.
