Message From The Chair Dear Members, This month I would like to invite you to two outstanding programs. We get off to a fast start with a professional development seminar on November 3; entitled "The Fundamentals of FEA for Product Design" presented by ALGOR application engineers John Holtz and Jeffrey Wanko. This seminar demonstrates the application of FEA with a presentation of the theoretical background and a walkthrough of real-world problems. The second program will be on November 16, and is entitled "Innovation & Entrepreneurship in the Local Engineering Community". Several engineering directors and executives in a panel discussion will address issues engineers and managers face in new and existing businesses. If you work in an innovative environment you don't want to miss this important program. A couple of months ago I mentioned a very important initiative that we plan to undertake, which is to establish an Industry Relations Committee that is intended to be very engaged with companies and industries throughout the Section. One of the primary functions of this committee is to work with companies who support their employees as members of ASME, and for those companies to let us know specifically what professional development or training we can provide to their employees. This in turn provides a more valuable employee receiving special knowledge and thus improves their bottom line. I would like to hear from those of you in managerial and supervisory roles to tell me what programs or activities our Section can hold, what training can we provide, or what other types of events can we have that will help your employees to be better or more successful in your organization. Are there events that we could provide directly to your organization - symposia, codes and standards, a forum or other type of technical presentation? What are your needs? One of our primary functions as a section is to provide more relevance and service to industry. Please let me know how we can serve you. And finally, the holidays are fast approaching. Thanksgiving is the time to express thanks for the bounty and blessings we enjoy and to spend time with family and friends. In want or in plenty, in times of challenge or times of calm, we always have reasons to be thankful. We should take time for kindness to those we hold most dear, and also extend a helping hand to others who are less fortunate. So, from all of us at the Pittsburgh Section, here's wishing you all the season's happiness this heartfelt wish can bring! Happy Thanksgiving! Sincerely,
November Program - Innovation/Entreupreneurship Joint Meeting w/ASM, SME, & SPE
Program Description: ASME, ASM, SME and SPE are excited to join forces to bring you this month's
program. A diverse panel will discuss Innovation and Entrepreneurship
issues that engineers face in new and existing businesses. Much of the
discussion will stem from audience questions. A sampling of issues to

Mentors Needed for NE Week Future City Competition The National Engineers Week Future City Competition™ seeks engineers from every field to volunteer this fall and winter to introduce middle school students across the nation to a career in engineering. Since its founding in 1992, the educational program has made engineering come alive for hundreds of thousands of students. Voices of Innovation A new daily public radio program, "Voices of Innovation," launched by the American Association of Engineering Societies with generous support from ASME, features some 200 engineers in 2-minute programs that explore and celebrate the world of engineering. The program began airing in April 2002. To be considered for one of the programs, engineers need to submit a story idea form, which is available at www.voicesofinnovation.org.
E-Mentoring Program to Expand to Young Engineers The success of last year's program and the enthusiastic response of members wanting to become mentors has fueled the expansion of the e-Mentoring program. This program for student members is expanding to include mentoring services for engineers who have recently (5 years or less) graduated from engineering school. Young engineers can now benefit from the career advice of more seasoned engineers in their particular field of interest. Recent graduates may get even more benefit from a mentoring relationship, since they have some experience and may have more specific career questions. How does the program work? Students and young engineers (mentees) seeking a mentor choose from a database of names, which gives information about the mentor's background, experience and engineering specialty. Mentees are then asked to fill out an online application indicating their top three choices for mentors. The mentor requests are evaluated by ASME and matched on a first come, first served basis. Only members are eligible to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. Anyone wishing to find a mentor or to volunteer to become a mentor for a student or young engineer member should visit the website at www.asme.org/ementoring. Volunteers can choose to mentor a student, a young engineer or both. Questions about the program should be addressed to Deidra Hackley, at hackleyd@asme.org.
