Message From The Chair

Happy New Year !

I'm so excited to start the new year and inform you of a wide variety of excellent programs and tours. I'm currently working on two outstanding tours, in which details will be publicized very soon.

Our next event is the Future Cities Competition on January 21, that introduces middle school students to a career in engineering. Mentors are always needed and welcome, and this is a chance for you to share your knowledge by instructing a student, while advancing and strengthening your profession. More information is on the section website. Please consider donating a day of your time and talent towards an engineer of tomorrow.

On February 7, we will be bringing to you "The Power of Insulation" with Mr. Ron King, a unique presentation on how insulation is engineered and many surprising ways that it's used.

We have another exciting presentation for you on February 13th, entitled "PE 101 - A Primer on Polyethylene Pipe for Water and Natural Gas Distribution Systems" which will explain and demonstrate how polyethylene is used to provide you with gas and water utilities. Presented by Dr. Eugene Palermo, PhD, he has devoted his entire career of over 30 years to plastic materials for piping applications, and is internationally recognized for his contributions.

February 17th is National Engineer's week, and looking ahead to March, we will present to you a tour of the Winber Research Institute and Joyce Murtha Breast Cancer Center near Johnstown. We're also hoping to have a PMP professional development course in the Spring for those of you who are interested in program and project management.

Finally I want to encourage you to take a few moments to vote for our next Section Chair, who will take the reigns on July 1. Heather Debiase is currently the Vice-Chair and she will be an outstanding leader during the next session. Also please vote for the Directors up for reelection. All four nominees have provided a tremendous service to our organization over the years and deserve your vote. An online ballot is available on our website at http://sections.asme.org/pgh/ as well as the latest news and information.

Sincerely,
Rich Horne, Chair

Program Description:

Join ASME to hear Ron King present "The Power of Insulation", The commercial, Industrial and Mechanical Segments of the Construction Industry. Can insulation reduce energy consumption and emissions; be part an integral part of your safety program; improve the environment in which you work; increase productivity; eliminate or at minimum reduce corrosion under insulation, control condensation and mold growth and provide a great return on your investment? Usually what sounds too good to be true, isn't. That's not true here. You have to see it to believe it. Did you know that insulation is applied but rarely engineered? This presentation provides evidence as to the power of insulation when designed, installed and maintained properly and provides educational tools, including a comprehensive energy management software program, to assist you in your selection and evaluation of this forgotten technology, simply known as insulation.

Mr. King recently retired as the Chairman, President and CEO of one of the nation's largest diverse insulation and specialty distributors. He is a past President of the national Insulation Association (NIA), the Southwest Insulation Contractors Association and the World Insulation and Acoustic Organization.

Program Description:

Dr. Eugene F. Palermo, PhD, will present an overview of the materials, new developments and successful application of high-density polyethylene pipe (HDPE), specifically for this nation's critical natural gas and water distribution systems. Special emphasis will be placed on new material developments including bimodal PE materials that have greatly enhanced HDPE's service life (> 100 years) and resistance to slow crack growth. These developments are now prompting significant usage of much larger diameter HDPE pipe, especially in the water market.

With all the recent news about costly and highly disruptive water main breaks in the Pittsburgh region, come and learn more about an alternative pipe material that is light weight, will not corrode, is leak-free, highly resistant to earth movement and thermal expansion/contraction, least expensive to install and certified safe by the National Sanitation Foundation.

Dr. Palermo has devoted his entire career to the development of plastic materials for piping applications. He is currently the President of Palermo Plastic Pipe Consultants, Inc., former Technical Director of the Plastic Pipe Institute and Chairman of the Hydrostatic Stress Board of PPI, former chief polyethylene scientist for the DuPont corporation with 30+ years experience in the development and application if PE materials and specifically HDPE and other specialty plastic pipe materials. He is active in the major technical societies including ASTM, ISO, AGA, and PPI. He has "Chaired several international plastic pipe conferences. Dr. Palermo, "Gene" to his colleagues, has received numerous awards and is internationally recognized for his significant contributions to safer, more reliable underground piping systems worldwide.

American Society for Quality (ASQ) Lean Sigma Focus Group presents:
Design for Six Sigma

Date:
Thursday, January 25, 2007
Location: La Roche College Main Campus, Ryan Room (see enclosed directions)
Dinner & Program: 5:30pm – 8:00pm Attire is Business Casual Cost The inclusive cost is $25 per person
Registration: Advanced registration for this event must be made through ESWP by Tuesday January 16, 2007 (call 412-261-4300) by credit card. Please provide your name, company name, title and e-mail address.
Questions: Contact Stacy Rose, Stacy.Rose@am.sony.com for any questions concerning this event.
Additional Information: The topic of the presentation is "Design for Six Sigma". The typical Six Sigma effort involves improvement of an existing process to reduce variation and improve the quality of the results. However, when an organization is interested in designing and implementing a new process, the Six Sigma DMAIC approach is less effective. In this case, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methods are applied. This presentation will cover the basic differences of DFSS from Six Sigma; pros, cons, challenges and pitfalls in moving from DMAIC to DFSS; use of DFSS for marketing; and methods used in DFSS. Join us on January 25 as Bill Rushmore presents information on Design for Six Sigma. Mr. Rushmore teaches and operates his own company that consults in Six Sigma based improvement, IT systems, and process development. The January session includes a short networking session from 5:30 – 6 pm, full buffet dinner from 6 - 6:45 pm, and a presentation of the topic from 6:45 - 8pm.

The Pittsburgh Golden Triangle Chapter of ASM-International In Collaboration with the Robert Morris University present Materials for Non-Materials Professionals - A Primer on Material and Process Selection for Product Development

"Materials for Non-Materials Professionals" will be given in four weekly evening sessions of three hours each, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., on March 14, March 21, March 28, and April 4. The course will be presented at the Sewall Center on the campus of Robert Morris University, Moon Township.

This month's problem: (something easy)

A 2" length of steel bar is elongated to a length of 2.010" at which time the diameter changed from 0.5050" to 0.5042". Calculate Poisson's Ratio of this material.

Solution and a new problem next month. Have fun!

E-Mentoring Program to Expand to Young Engineers

The success of last year's program and the enthusiastic response of members wanting to become mentors has fueled the expansion of the e-Mentoring program. This program for student members is expanding to include mentoring services for engineers who have recently (5 years or less) graduated from engineering school. Young engineers can now benefit from the career advice of more seasoned engineers in their particular field of interest. Recent graduates may get even more benefit from a mentoring relationship, since they have some experience and may have more specific career questions.

How does the program work? Students and young engineers (mentees) seeking a mentor choose from a database of names, which gives information about the mentor's background, experience and engineering specialty. Mentees are then asked to fill out an online application indicating their top three choices for mentors. The mentor requests are evaluated by ASME and matched on a first come, first served basis. Only members are eligible to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. Anyone wishing to find a mentor or to volunteer to become a mentor for a student or young engineer member should visit the website at www.asme.org/ementoring. Volunteers can choose to mentor a student, a young engineer or both.

Questions about the program should be addressed to Deidra Hackley, at hackleyd@asme.org.
