Message From The Chair Greetings Members, Our first event for this month will be an exciting presentation on February 13th, entitled "PE 101 - A Primer on Polyethylene Pipe for Water and Natural Gas Distribution Systems", which will explain and demonstrate how polyethylene is used to provide gas and water utilities. Presented by Dr. Eugene Palermo, PhD, he has devoted his entire career of over 30 years to plastic materials for piping applications, and is internationally recognized for his contributions. If you work in any related utility or industry or want to learn about polyethylene, you won't want to miss this terrific presentation. Our February 7 presentation "The Power of Insulation with Mr. Ron King, has been rescheduled for February 28. This is a unique presentation on how insulation is engineered and many surprising ways that it's used. A comprehensive energy management software tool will also be distributed to attendees. In March, we will tour the Windber Research Institute and Joyce Murtha Breast Cancer Center near Johnstown. We're also developing a PMP professional development course, a Spring Student Mixer, and several other programs and tours. Also in March, The FIRST RoboBurgh Regional Competition will take place March 8, 9, & 10, 2007 at the Petersen Event Center, University of Pittsburgh. FIRST RoboBurgh Regional is an exciting, multinational competition that teams engineering, business, and technology professionals with high school students to design and build a robot that solves a challenging engineering design problem. Volunteers are needed to help these students develop skills the technology competent workforce employers need. Please consider donating some of your time and talent as your contribution is immeasurable towards the advancement of our profession. More information will be posted on our website soon. Finally I want to call to your attention some outstanding work from local students. In December, five students representing Greater Latrobe Senior High School took First Place at the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. The competition was held at the Carnegie Science Center, where 155 students competing in teams had to build an analog clock that turned back the hour hand by one hour in twenty steps or more. In January, students from St. Bede School in Point Breeze took First Place in the regional National Engineers Week Future City Competition at the Carnegie Music Hall. They built a consolidated city with a high-tech economy and nearly no pollution. This was the third year in a row that they've won the regional competition. Congratulations to all!! Have a great February; I look forward to seeing you at our events. As always, if you have a suggestion for a special program or tour that you would like to see, please let us know. We're here for you! Sincerely,
February Program - The Power of Insulation National Insulation Presentation with featured speaker
Ron King
Program Description: Join ASME to hear Ron King present "The Power of Insulation", The commercial, Industrial and Mechanical Segments of the Construction Industry. Can insulation reduce energy consumption and emissions; be part an integral part of your safety program; improve the environment in which you work; increase productivity; eliminate or at minimum reduce corrosion under insulation, control condensation and mold growth and provide a great return on your investment? Usually what sounds too good to be true, isn't. That's not true here. You have to see it to believe it. Did you know that insulation is applied but rarely engineered? This presentation provides evidence as to the power of insulation when designed, installed and maintained properly and provides educational tools, including a comprehensive energy management software program, to assist you in your selection and evaluation of this forgotten technology, simply known as insulation. Mr. King recently retired as the Chairman, President and CEO of one of the nation's largest diverse insulation and specialty distributors. He is a past President of the national Insulation Association (NIA), the Southwest Insulation Contractors Association and the World Insulation and Acoustic Organization.

Voices of Innovation A new daily public radio program, "Voices of Innovation," launched by the American Association of Engineering Societies with generous support from ASME, features some 200 engineers in 2-minute programs that explore and celebrate the world of engineering. The program began airing in April 2002. To be considered for one of the programs, engineers need to submit a story idea form, which is available at www.voicesofinnovation.org.
E-Mentoring Program to Expand to Young Engineers The success of last year's program and the enthusiastic response of members wanting to become mentors has fueled the expansion of the e-Mentoring program. This program for student members is expanding to include mentoring services for engineers who have recently (5 years or less) graduated from engineering school. Young engineers can now benefit from the career advice of more seasoned engineers in their particular field of interest. Recent graduates may get even more benefit from a mentoring relationship, since they have some experience and may have more specific career questions. How does the program work? Students and young engineers (mentees) seeking a mentor choose from a database of names, which gives information about the mentor's background, experience and engineering specialty. Mentees are then asked to fill out an online application indicating their top three choices for mentors. The mentor requests are evaluated by ASME and matched on a first come, first served basis. Only members are eligible to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. Anyone wishing to find a mentor or to volunteer to become a mentor for a student or young engineer member should visit the website at www.asme.org/ementoring. Volunteers can choose to mentor a student, a young engineer or both. Questions about the program should be addressed to Deidra Hackley, at hackleyd@asme.org.
Nominations Needed for Young Engineers Award ASME International wants to give $5,000 plus a prepaid life membership to a young ASME member that has done an outstanding job in their profession, community, and the work of ASME. If you know someone who deserves to win this award, please nominate a young engineer for the Old Guard Young Engineers Award today!
