Message From The Chair Greetings Members, As many of you who signed up for last month's events know first-hand, February was a real tough one for us. Everything that we had planned was snowed out, iced out, washed out, or just plain frozen out. So, with a little planning and rescheduling, March will surely be a more productive month for all of us. The "PE 101 - A Primer on Polyethylene Pipe for Water and Natural Gas Distribution Systems", program has been rescheduled to Thursday, March 15, and will explain and demonstrate how polyethylene is used to provide gas and water utilities. We had an excellent initial sign-up for this event and expect the attendance to be even better. You don't want to miss this one!! Our February 28 presentation "The Power of Insulation with Mr. Ron King, has been postponed to a future date. We will offer this program again in the near future, with a potential of combining it with another related event. This month we are planning a tour of the Windber Research Institute and Joyce Murtha Breast Cancer Center near Johnstown. Details are being finalized and a date will be announced soon. We are also finalizing details for two tours in the Pittsburgh area, which will also be announced soon. Also this month, The FIRST RoboBurgh Regional Competition will take place March 8, 9, & 10, 2007 at the Petersen Event Center, University of Pittsburgh. FIRST RoboBurgh Regional is an exciting, multinational competition that teams engineering, business, and technology professionals with high school students to design and build a robot that solves a challenging engineering design problem. Volunteers are needed to help these students develop skills the technology competent workforce employers need. Please consider donating some of your time and talent, as your contribution is immeasurable towards the advancement of our profession. Our Annual Banquet is coming up and we're calling for nominations for Engineer of the Year. Do you know someone deserving of this prestigious award? Criteria includes being a member of our Section, a resident of the Section for at least three years, practicing engineering or management for at least ten years, and has achievement in either patents/inventions, service to the profession of engineering students, or engineering entrepreneurship and job creation. The Pittsburgh Golden Triangle Chapter of ASM-International In Collaboration with the Robert Morris University present Materials for Non-Materials Professionals - A Primer on Material and Process Selection for Product Development "Materials for Non-Materials Professionals" will be given in four weekly evening sessions of three hours each, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., on March 14, March 21, March 28, and April 4. The course will be presented at the Sewall Center on the campus of Robert Morris University, Moon Township. For more information, see the attached flyer (.doc).

Some Technology Humor (true story): A former Canadian defense minister says the answer to concerns about climate change is technology from UFOs. He's demanding that governments worldwide use secret alien technology to replace fossil fuels and save the planet from global warming. Paul Hellyer served in the Canadian cabinet in the sixties. He tells the Ottawa Citizen that governments have alien technology they obtained from the crashes of UFOs. He says those spacecrafts were equipped with advanced fuel sources and propulsion systems that could eliminate the burning of fossil fuel within a generation. **ASME's Mechanical Engineering Magazine periodically contains the new supplement Engineering Management. Voices of Innovation A new daily public radio program, "Voices of Innovation," launched by the American Association of Engineering Societies with generous support from ASME, features some 200 engineers in 2-minute programs that explore and celebrate the world of engineering. The program began airing in April 2002. To be considered for one of the programs, engineers need to submit a story idea form, which is available at www.voicesofinnovation.org.
E-Mentoring Program to Expand to Young Engineers The success of last year's program and the enthusiastic response of members wanting to become mentors has fueled the expansion of the e-Mentoring program. This program for student members is expanding to include mentoring services for engineers who have recently (5 years or less) graduated from engineering school. Young engineers can now benefit from the career advice of more seasoned engineers in their particular field of interest. Recent graduates may get even more benefit from a mentoring relationship, since they have some experience and may have more specific career questions. How does the program work? Students and young engineers (mentees) seeking a mentor choose from a database of names, which gives information about the mentor's background, experience and engineering specialty. Mentees are then asked to fill out an online application indicating their top three choices for mentors. The mentor requests are evaluated by ASME and matched on a first come, first served basis. Only members are eligible to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. Anyone wishing to find a mentor or to volunteer to become a mentor for a student or young engineer member should visit the website at www.asme.org/ementoring. Volunteers can choose to mentor a student, a young engineer or both. Questions about the program should be addressed to Deidra Hackley, at hackleyd@asme.org.
