Join the Pittsburgh Sections of ASME for a tour of the Modern Control Room Simulator for Nuclear Plants Tour at Westinghouse Electric Company in Monroeville. Westinghouse will be providing a tour of the AP1000 Nuclear Power Plant Control Room Simulator that is under development, along with an overview of their I&C technology.

The AP1000 is an advanced 1000 megawatt (electric) nuclear power plant that uses the forces of nature and simplicity of design to enhance plant safety and operations and reduce construction costs. The control room design uses compact workstations with soft controls and displays to monitor and control the plant.

Four AP1000 plants have been sold to China and are expected to come on line in 2013. US utilities have likewise recognized the value of this design and have tentatively chosen the AP1000 for 12 domestic plants. We hope you can join us for what will no doubt be a very interesting and educational tour.

When registering for the tour, please be sure to include Name, Company Affiliations and Citizenship. Also, the tour has a limited amount of space. Sign up early to guarantee your space!

Message from the Chair

Dear Members,

Is it really the end of summer already? It seems like the last few months flew by and here we are ready to start what will hopefully be another exciting year at the ASME Pittsburgh section. We have some very exciting and interesting programs lined up for this year already, and there are sure to be some new ones added as we go along. On September 26th, we'll be heading to the Cheswick Power Plant for a tour. Details are located in the September newsletter.

October is going to be an equally exciting month. On October 3rd, ASME will be visiting Westinghouse Electric Company for an encore program of the Modern Control Room Simulator Plants Tour. This tour was originally a joint program between the Pittsburgh section of IEEE and ASME, and both organizations have now gone and scheduled another separate one because of the overwhelming interest in the program. We hope to see you there! Then on October 23rd, ASME will be holding a program at the Elliott Company in Jeannette where they manufactured the first American-built diesel-engine turbocharger. Elliott now provides turbomachinery products and services to a diverse range of customer applications worldwide. Our annual Student Mixer will be held at Carnegie Mellon on November 7th. The program will be about the generation gaps in today's workforces and students from Pitt, CMU, Robert Morris, Geneva, and Point Park will be attending. There will also be time for students to interact with local professionals! Please consider joining the section and student sections for this informational and fun program.

These few programs are just the tip of the iceberg. Tours and programs are being scheduled for the rest of the year including the Windber Research Institute just outside of Johnstown and many more. As in the past, ASME will continue supporting traditional events such as Rube Goldberg Competition, Future Cities Competition, and National Engineers Week.

As a way to try and get more locals involved with the Pittsburgh Section, we are changing the format some for Executive Committee (EC) meetings. Our first EC meeting of the year will be held on Thursday, September 6th at 6 p.m. at the Panera Bread on Forbes Ave in Oakland. I hope this will interest those who live and work closer to the city to participate. Please contact any EC member if you are interested in becoming more involved with the Section. I would especially like to direct this invitation to those recent graduates and early-career engineers. One of the greatest, and transferable skills, is leadership. Joining our Section is a fantastic opportunity to gain that experience and expand your sphere of influence and create synergy working with others.

Finally, I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to our Past Chair Rich Horne and all of the Executive Committee for doing a great job this past year to make it a success. I look forward to continued success with this exceptional group of individuals.

In the coming months I will be discussing the above items in-depth. Throughout the year, we will be inviting you to get more involved with your local section, and encourage your participation in activities as well as your feedback. We hope that you find this an enjoyable and rewarding year with the Pittsburgh Section.

Sincerely,
Heather DeBiase, Chair 2007-2008

Some Technology Humor (true story):

A former Canadian defense minister says the answer to concerns about climate change is technology from UFOs. He's demanding that governments worldwide use secret alien technology to replace fossil fuels and save the planet from global warming.

Paul Hellyer served in the Canadian cabinet in the sixties. He tells the Ottawa Citizen that governments have alien technology they obtained from the crashes of UFOs. He says those spacecrafts were equipped with advanced fuel sources and propulsion systems that could eliminate the burning of fossil fuel within a generation.

Voices of Innovation

A new daily public radio program, "Voices of Innovation," launched by the American Association of Engineering Societies with generous support from ASME, features some 200 engineers in 2-minute programs that explore and celebrate the world of engineering. The program began airing in April 2002. To be considered for one of the programs, engineers need to submit a story idea form, which is available at www.voicesofinnovation.org.

E-Mentoring Program to Expand to Young Engineers

The success of last year's program and the enthusiastic response of members wanting to become mentors has fueled the expansion of the e-Mentoring program. This program for student members is expanding to include mentoring services for engineers who have recently (5 years or less) graduated from engineering school. Young engineers can now benefit from the career advice of more seasoned engineers in their particular field of interest. Recent graduates may get even more benefit from a mentoring relationship, since they have some experience and may have more specific career questions.

How does the program work? Students and young engineers (mentees) seeking a mentor choose from a database of names, which gives information about the mentor's background, experience and engineering specialty. Mentees are then asked to fill out an online application indicating their top three choices for mentors. The mentor requests are evaluated by ASME and matched on a first come, first served basis. Only members are eligible to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. Anyone wishing to find a mentor or to volunteer to become a mentor for a student or young engineer member should visit the website at www.asme.org/ementoring. Volunteers can choose to mentor a student, a young engineer or both.

Questions about the program should be addressed to Deidra Hackley, at hackleyd@asme.org.
