MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT
Our last facility tour
and luncheon meeting for this fiscal ASME year is
on Thursday May 17, 2012;
the Florence Little Theatre (FLT.) The tour
will start at 11 AM and we'll follow
with lunch somewhere near the facility.
FLT
is located in downtown Florence on 417 South Dargan Street,
Florence,SC 29506.
Our contact is the Executive Director, Sue Schatz
(843-662-3731.) They also
have a Technical Director, Lisa Sims, and a
Master Carpenter, Craig Lovenenscheimer.
Joe DeVito, a volunteer, may
assist with the tour.
Here is some history
mostly from their web site:
Florence Little Theatre started in 1923 and has
featured many of the
communities’ talented performers who volunteer their
skills on a part time basis.
In January 2006, the call came that would open
a whole new world for FLT.
The Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation offered a $10
million grant to fund
construction of a new theatre in downtown Florence. In
addition to the
grant, McLeod Health, Florence County and Drs. Bruce and Lee
Foundation
also deeded the properties needed to build a new theatre on. The
Board of
Directors accepted this generous and completely unexpected offer and
begin
working on fulfilling a dream – a 35,000 square foot facility boasting
a
400 seat auditorium, rehearsal hall, set construction shop, increased and
updated
technical capabilities, expanded lobby, additional dressing rooms,
a board
room, costume shop and increased storage space – and yes
– bigger
bathrooms!
The design of the new theatre lends itself to the possibility
of
use by other organizations and private entities for various functions
including
civic meetings, receptions and corporate use.
A Note: Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation
have contributed significant sums to
revitalize downtown Florence, supporting
the new very impressive Library and
the recently constructed Performing Arts
Center also located in the area.
