May Section Meeting

WHAT: 
Tour of Owens-Illinois, Auburn

WHERE:

Followed by dinner, at Old Erie Restaurant, 8924 N Seneca St., Weedsport, 6:00 PM.

BACKGROUND:
O-I, Auburn, operates 24 hours a day with about 230 employees, manufacturing over 2.5 million glass beverage containers a day.  Two furnaces, natural gas fired with an electric boost, combine for a melt capacity of 600 tons per day.  About 300 tons per day of recycled glass enters the process.  Proprietary O-I designed machines manufacture these millions of containers ranging, in size, from 7 oz to 40 oz big beer containers. Come see what O-I’s furnaces and 8, 10 and 12 section, “double-gob” and “triple-gob” machines do. The operation also includes packaging, robotic palletizing, and 400,000 square feet of on-site warehousing.

What to expect:
A brief video about the process, a tour of the facility, a Q & A session, and adjournment to dinner.

For the tour, with safety and confidentiality in mind:

  1. Long pants are required.
  2. Wear substantial shoes; no sandals, no high heels or open toes.
  3. Cameras, photography, taping in the facility are prohibited.
  4. O-I will provide hats, safety glasses and ear plugs.

Note:  We will be privy to some proprietary information.  Therefore, employees of a direct competitor of O-I cannot be permitted on the tour.  The rest of us must just bear in mind our moral and ethical responsibility for confidentiality.

DINNER at Old Erie Restaurant.  Choice of: (1) Pan seared Rib Eye steak served with “pizza rustica”  (2) Chicken Scaloppini, medallions with capers, mushrooms artichoke hearts and angel hair pasta  (3) New England Style Haddock, crumb topped, broiled, lemon-butter sauce and vegetables  (4) Pumpkin Raviolis, pasta pillows filled with roasted pumpkin and ricotta cheese, finished with light sage cream sauce and Asiago cheese.

COST: Dinner cost is $20.  Alcoholic drinks will cost extra.

DIRECTIONS:

To Owens-Illinois:

  • From Thruway Exit 40: South on Rt. 34, about 6 ½ miles.  Left onto County House Rd. and you are there.
  • From Elbridge: West on Rt. 5, about 6 miles.  Right on County House Rd., about 1.8 miles.
  • From Grant Ave. in Auburn: North on Rt. 34 (North St.), 2.3 miles.  Right onto County House Rd. and you are there.

From Owens-Illinois to Old Erie Restaurant:

Right onto Rt. 34 north, about 6 miles.  The restaurant is on the right, just past E. Brutus St., in the village of Weedsport.
