Chairman’s Message
Hello again and I hope your summer was filled with vacations, bar-b-ques and outdoor activities. Your executive committee has already been at work bringing you some interesting tours and lectures for the coming year. If you have ideas for a tour or event, please forward them to me or your area manager.
I especially wish to thank Joel Derk for joining the executive committee as our webmaster. He has volunteered to upgrade and enhance our website. The executive committee is always accepting of new officers and volunteers. If you need an activity to gain more interpersonal and management skills with little time expended, this is an opportunity you should not pass up.
Our Delaware River Manager, Jeff Daniels, has prepared a tour of Binney & Smith Inc. at their manufacturing facility in Stockertown, PA (north of Easton) on Sept. 26th. Spaces are limited, so don’t procrastinate. Details follow later in this newsletter.
On October 24th, our Student Night at Lafayette College features ASME Distinguished Lecturer, Arthur W. Ebeling, presenting "Indy Racing and the Effect of Aerodynamics on the Car". Details will follow in the October newsletter.

Balwin Hardware (Reading Area) has been chosen as this section’s ASME Industry Award recipient for the best tour from the 2001-2002 activity year. If you missed this one, it was an evening full of interesting sights and discussion. The section will arrange the award presentation at a later date.
Voices of Innovation
Voice of Innovation is a new radio program, debuting on Sept. 2 nd, being sponsored by the American Association of Engineering Societies to increase public awareness of contributions of engineers to society. Currently, 68 spots will be aired over the next few months. If you wish for more information or would like the program to run locally, please contact me.
Washington DC Embassy Tour
The Washington DC Section typically provides one foreign embassy tour per year. The meeting this year will be at the Indian Embassy scheduled for October 2002. There are no details as yet. If you wish to inquire further, please notify me for the DC contact.

Binney & Smith was formed in 1885 when cousins Edwin Binney and Harold Smith took over the Peekskill Chemical Works, a pigment manufacturing operation owned by Edwin’s father. The early products included charcoal, lamp black, carbon black, and a red oxide pigment for barn paint. The company opened a manufacturing facility in Easton PA in 1900, and three years later, seeing a need for safe and affordable wax crayons, Binney & Smith produced the first box of Crayola crayons.
Binney & Smith, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Hallmark Cards, manufactures crayons, markers, colored pencils, paints, Silly Putty, and other arts & crafts products. They have manufacturing facilities in Easton, Bethlehem, England, and Mexico, and sell their products worldwide. Easton is the home to a large portion of their manufacturing, in addition to Binney & Smith corporate headquarters.
