Chairman’s Comments

My daughter is quite the artist. She’s very proud of her work, especially if it’s on the coffee table or kitchen wall. I found out at the Binney and Smith tour that they have an invisible marker product that on contact with a treated paper, instantly produces the colors. I will be buying some new supplies for my daughter in the near future.

I would like to thank Jeff Daniels, Delaware Area Manager/Treasurer, for providing the section with an excellent tour. This is a facility that does not give open tours. You’ll find his comments later in this newsletter. Keep an eye out for our upcoming events. We have a racing car theme for October and November.

Back in the Saddle Again!

You might have noticed that I dropped my company information from the letterhead some time ago. I had been downsized and on the job hunt for several months. I believe that there is good in any experience. The "good" for me was evident in two parts- preparation and making this situation into an opportunity.

I specifically mean being mentally prepared to due the day-to-day foot work. Without the support of my family (my wife especially), it would have been very different. That showed me how fortunate I am. I also had an opportunity to devote more time toward the most important parts of my life. I added priceless time with my daughter, saw my mother through an illness, visited more with older family members, and allocated more to my volunteer activities. My wife says that some things happen for a reason- how true.

Well, I’m back to working longer hours, commuting, fixing the home on the weekends, and waking at 5:30am. My time off gave me an insight that I can overcome any bad day. If you’ve in a similar situation, I have some stories to share. Accept encouragement and seek the best in your life.

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.- Abraham Lincoln

September 2002 tour recap: Binney & Smith Inc.

In September our section toured the Forks Township manufacturing facilities of Binney & Smith. We saw both crayons and markers being produced and packaged.

The crayon process involved pouring colored wax into a mold, cooling the mold, and wrapping the crayon. At the marker cells, we saw the marker barrel being created in an injection molder, the felt and nib inserted into the barrel, the ink injected into the felt, and finally the barrel was capped.

Since the manufacture of these products is essentially mature technology, Binney’s concentration is improving the efficiency, speed, and quality of the manufacturing process. Binney takes great pride in the improvements they’ve made over the last five years, which ranged from 25% to over 100% improvements in various product lines.

Many thanks to Doug Brand, Ken Dietrich, Tom Flannagan, George Nagel, and John Stecz for staying at work late to act as tour guides and explain some of the many process improvements Binney & Smith has implemented over the past several years.

SPECIAL REMINDER

Since the November Meeting in Reading runs so closely on the heels of the October lecture, we’ve decided to only run one Newsletter for hardcopy mailing. Please keep this in mind: THERE WILL BE NO FURTHER NOTICE FOR THE NOVEMBER TOUR AT PENSKE IN READING. Please reserve early and schedule accordingly. Always remember you can access our website for up-to-date information at www.asme.org/sections/a-lv/index.html – Thanks!
