Chair’s Comments

:

Old Business:

Unfortunately I was not able to attend last months meeting at the Yuengling Brewery. (I was home studying for the October 2003 PE Exam.) When I see people at our December 4th meeting, I will be certain to inquire what engineering-related subjects were covered – "the fluid dynamics of brewing, bottling and drinking beer". (I hope everyone can "remember" the meeting.)

Our thanks go out to our Glenn Lunger for arranging this Allentown area tour and to the Yuengling Brewery for kindly hosting us. They certainly do their job well - making quality beverage products!

New Business:

perhaps it is not too late to take part in these meetings/events. I am looking forward to hearing what our Newsletter Editor, Dr. Richard Merz, has to say about his experiences at the Congress.

Have a safe and festive holiday season! See you at the Flowserve tour.

Doug Robertson, Section Chair

Newsletter Editor’s Comments

:

Our transition to an electronic Newsletter for those with email addresses on file with ASME is complete. Anyone not receiving a hardcopy who wants one needs to notify me at merzr@asme.org . Please keep ASME up-to-date with your preferred email at https://www.asmeny.org/memberaddr/html/security.htm .

In response to last month’s Newsletter I heard from Ronald Hartranft and Keith Gardiner of Lehigh University, Kathy Kinsey of Air Products, and Dyer Harris, our Regional Vice President Elect. I appreciate comments on the Newsletter and look forward to hearing from more of you. In addition, I encourage you will come out to a Section Meeting so I can meet you.

Speaking of hearing from our members, I have started a section in the Newsletter that I call the Members’ Forum. I will be happy to publish comments from you. This is your chance to express your views and get them out to the other members of the Section as well as the leaders of ASME in Region III and at the National level who receive this newsletter. Here is your chance to sound off so take advantage of it. This month Mike Hopstock raises some interesting points which questions just whose Society is ASME.

In October we had a great tour of the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, PA. Individuals attending the meeting included: Jeff Daniels, Glenn Lunger, Louis Hayden, Fred Wolf, Tom Reilly, Andy Ryan, Gordon Yerry, Bill Nelson and his wife, Matt Fletcher, Everett DeLuca, Richard Merz, Joel Derk, Bob Steger, Chuck Kissinger, Bob Opsitos, Cliff O'Hearne, and Yu-Ming Liang. Be sure to read the Tour Report below.

As I reported last month, major changes are in the wind that will affect your Society. The Continuity and Change at ASME Update below provides a means for you to read about the proposed changes and provide your input. It is most important that you let the Society’s leadership know your views on these matters. In another matter from last moth, I hope some of you have signed up for the ementoring program. If so, I would appreciate hearing from you. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so and give a young engineer the benefit of your experience.

The Susquehanna Section of ASME has invited us to join them in December for a tour of the Giant Center (home of the Hershey Bears Ice Hockey Team) and a hockey game after the tour. A copy of their meeting announcement is included as part of our mailing. If you would like to attend, please make your reservations with the folks in the Susquehanna Section by Friday, Nov. 28, 2003.

Make sure to visit http://www.asmenews.org/ the week of Nov. 15-21 to find out what's happening at the 2003 ASME Congress, quickly and easily. Coverage of most Congress events will be posted on Late-Breaking News on ASME NEWS within hours of them happening.

Baldwin Hardware in Reading, PA has a job opportunity – see their ad below.

Finally, I urge all of you to come out for this month’s meeting. We will be touring the Flowserve’s Pump Parts Manufacturing Plant in Clarks Summit, PA. Details are given below. I hope to see you there.

Richard Merz, Newsletter Editor

Members’ Forum

:

I just read on ASME.org that we get a 50% discount for ordering the report on salaries paid to ME's. That's off of the $375 price tag. I'm sure they have a substantial amount of data in it, but let's get real ... $187.50 to learn what we make. Remember too, the survey was done on our ASME members. I truly believe that these type of things turn our members OFF, especially right after we paid the $116 membership fee.

My questions are:

Who makes all the profit?

Who made up, ran, and compiled the survey?

If its ASME headquarters ... something must be done to correct this abuse of power.

What could our local section do to correct this problem?

A natural expansion of that thought is the high cost of most everything that ASME offers it members, namely the seminars. From my point of view, the only benefit I get out of our yearly dues is generated by the efforts our local section members through our monthly events. So, where does my $116 yearly fee go?

I work for one of the few companies who still pay professional membership fees. Probably the biggest reason companies don't subsidize their employees is because they don't see the value. Need I say more or am I the only one who thinks this is a problem?

October Tour Report– Yuengling Brewer

On Wednesday October 22nd, the Anthracite-Lehigh Valley Section, along with members of the Susquehanna Section, toured the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville. Yuengling is the oldest family owned brewery in the country, brewing great beers since 1829. After brewing exclusively in Pottsville for 170 years, Yuengling has expanded both production capacity and geographically recently. In 1999, Yuengling began brewery operations in Tampa, Florida, and then in 2001, they opened a second Schuylkill county brewery in nearby St. Clair.

Attendees were treated to a great after-hours tour at the original brewery in Pottsville. We viewed the brewing tank, mash and lauter tuns, and the bottling operations. We learned how beer is brewed, beginning with corn and barley, brewing with water, adding hops, and then finally pasteurization and bottling. Guests were treated to two beer samples of their choice after the tour.

Several interesting facts about Yuengling:

We wish to thank Yuengling brewery for their hospitality and to show our appreciation I suggest that all section members enjoy a lager or other fine Yuengling brew next time they are at their local establishment.

Pictures from the tour are available at: http://www.asme.org/sections/a-lv/galleries/20031022_yuengling/index.htm
