CHANNEL ISLANDS SECTION
JANUARY 2000 NEWSLETTER
Inside this issue:
Dear Friends,
In February we will participate in the Engineers Week Banquet. Due to logistics problems, we have postponed our activity with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.
This past weekend I was in San Jose and attended a seminar sponsored by the Santa Clara Section. "Enhance Your Income Power" provides tools for identifying your skills, setting personal goals, and developing your career. The speaker accepted my invitation to present this seminar to our section in the near future.
I propose this seminar be held on a Saturday in March. We will discuss the arrangements at the next committee meeting on Wednesday 2/2 in Camarillo. You are welcome to participate. Please call me for details.

On Tuesday January 11, Professor Kenneth R. Diller presented "Engineering the Frozen Preservation of Living Tissues and Organs for Transplantation". About sixteen members and guests attended the dinner in Ventura.
Dr. Diller explained that the fundamental problem of preserving tissue is obtaining the proper cooling rate. At excessive cooling rates, ice crystals form within the cell and destroy the cellular material. When a cell cools too slowly, intracellular fluid flows out of the cell to counteract the increasing salinity of freezing extracellular fluid. The resulting dehydration kills the cell.
Different tissues require different cooling rates. By numerically solving sophisticated mass and heat transfer models, Dr. Diller has been able to predict the cooling behavior of certain tissues. He is extending his work to the preservation of whole organs. An organ provides a much more complicated modeling challenge due to the presence of multiple tissue types. Maintaining cooling rates is also difficult in such a relatively large specimen.
The Channel Islands Section thanks our Distinguished Lecturer for 2000, Dr. Kenneth Diller, for providing a fascinating glimpse into engineering cryopreservation.
THANK YOU DR. DILLER!
Chair Eric Kong presents Dr. Kenneth Diller, our Distinguished Lecturer for 2000, with a certificate of appreciation from the Channel Islands Section.
Have you foreseen a future where personal aircraft have replaced automobiles? This February you have the opportunity to learn firsthand from the founder of the company that is engineering that future today.
Every year in February, engineers around the nation participate in National Engineers Week to raise public awareness of the contributions of engineers to the modern standard of living. To celebrate National Engineers Week in the Channel Islands area, the local engineering societies will host an awards banquet on the evening of Wednesday, February 23. Presented awards will include Engineer of the Year, Engineering Project Achievement Awards, and thousands of dollars in scholarships.
The evening’s featured speaker will be Dr. Paul Moller of Moller International. Founded in 1983, this company has undertaken the design, development, and manufacture of a personal vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (VTOL). The company’s 2-passenger M200X Skycar has flown over 200 test flights. Within 18 months the 4-passenger M400 Skycar should be available for demonstration. Dr. Moller will discuss the challenges and innovation inherent in the Skycar design. Do not miss this opportunity to be an early witness to one possible future for personal transportation.
