CHANNEL ISLANDS SECTION

MAY 2000 NEWSLETTER

FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Dear Friends,

I never imagined myself running a marathon. But over the past several months my coworker and I trained regularly, and on March 5 we completed the 26.2 mile L.A. Marathon. We both finished in 4 hours and 10 minutes despite very severe weather conditions.

I learned dedication, commitment, and sharing from this experience, all of which relate to ASME involvement. Your executive committee is dedicated to serving this section by arranging events and sharing information with members. We have been training ourselves to serve you better. I am pleased that two of our executive members attended the Mega RAC (Regional Administrative Conference) last month in Las Vegas.

I encourage members to come to our executive committee meetings and provide feedback. Our meeting is generally on the second Thursday of the month at Round Table Pizza in Camarillo. Sharing is fun and becoming an executive member is fun. Like training for a marathon, we learn as we go. We focus on completing one mile at a time. I encourage members to take the first step to participate in our monthly meetings and to discover the fun and benefits of becoming an executive committee member for our section.

ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET

On Wednesday February 23, representatives from various engineering societies gathered at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley to celebrate National Engineers Week. About 10 members and guests of the Channel Islands ASME section attended.

After the presentation of numerous awards and scholarships, keynote speaker Dr. Paul Moller of Moller International discussed a future in which widespread use of personal aircraft is both necessary and economical. Dr. Moller then described his company’s personal aircraft development, thoroughly intriguing the audience.

Thanks to those Channel Islands section members who attended – we sincerely appreciate your participation.
