CHANNEL ISLANDS SECTION
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2000 NEWSLETTER
Inside this issue:
Greetings, Everyone! Although it comes a bit later than expected, the new ASME "season" is upon us. We are hoping to provide you with ample opportunities to become involved this year, beginning with our tour of the A.L. Johnson Co. facilities. Look for another event to follow hopefully in mid-November!
As always, the success of our year depends on your support. We hope to see each of you at all of our events this year, and, more importantly, we would love to have you participate in Section operations. The ASME is truly an organization that allows you to get out of it what you put into it. If you cannot volunteer just a little time each month to be a part of the Executive Committee, at least contact us by phone or e-mail to let us know how we are doing and what we can do to better serve you. Your input is welcomed and encouraged. I look forward to seeing you all.

THE ASME PROXY FORM
Each year at the IMECE, ASME meets to elect new officers and to vote on other business matters. All members are invited to vote in person at the meeting, scheduled this year on Friday, November 6th, 2000 at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel in Orlando, FL.
If you are unable to vote in person, please submit the proxy form shown above instead. The form, along with an addressed envelope (see below), was included with the September edition of Mechanical Engineering magazine. The central four pages of the September ASME NEWS (the newspaper included with the magazine) contain complete proxy instructions and biographical information for all the nominees listed on the form.
Only proxies received by 10:00am November 1, 2000 will be counted. Please show your enthusiastic support for our ASME President, Board of Governors, and Vice President nominees by submitting your vote.

ASME is happy to announce that we are launching a new e-mentoring program for student members.
Here's how it works. ASME member engineers register to
become mentors on our site. After you submit your information, it is posted
(without name and contact information) on the special e-mentoring site for
students to look at. Student members will then look at the information, register
and choose a mentor (top 3 choices). They will be matched here and contact
information will be sent to both parties. After a mentor has been matched,
his/her information will be removed from the database.
Please take a look
at the site at www.asme.org/ementoring and
spread the word to others in your sections and your divisions. Once we have
sufficient mentors registered, the site will be advertised to
students.
If you are unable to make the commitment to mentor, you can
still help students and young engineers online by answering questions on the Online Q and A at www.asme.org/youngengineers/QnA.html.

Drive!
Introduce a friend to ASME
The Introduction of a
Lifetime
The ASME 2000-01 Membership drive was launched this July. This year's theme is "The Introduction of a Lifetime". When you introduce a potential new member to ASME, everybody wins. Each member you recruit makes your section, division, region and Society stronger. More members mean more networking opportunities, volunteers for programs and money for programs. The new members get access to technical information they need through publications, conferences, professional development courses, and Mechanical Engineering magazine, as well as networking with member peers.
Also, when a colleague that you sponsor joins ASME, you get a chance to win a
Palm VII in our monthly drawing, or the grand prize of a Gateway float screen
computer.
How do I get started?

membership materials to your colleagues and talk to them about why you became a
