31 January 2008 Dinner Program - Saturn V Space Challenges (Joint with Dayton-Cincinnati ASME)Abstract: Dave Weber
will share his Saturn V experiences, specifically, the Brown Engineering
function and his two engineering sections, Von Braun, the static test stand
for the Saturn V, human factors considerations inside the S-IV-B Stage,
reliability of the IB-Centaur shroud separation system, and his trip to
Kennedy Space Center to perform Saturn V AS-500F. About
Dave Weber: From August 1963 to September 1966 he was the Chief of a couple
of sections of a contractor, Brown Engineering in Huntsville AL supplying the
Engineering personnel for NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The
last job he performed at MSFC was to make a trip to Kennedy Space Center to
gather complete vehicle configuration information necessary for the MSFC Propulsion
and Vehicle Engineering Laboratory to perform a Saturn V AS-500F vehicle
acceptance review. This was for the MSFC to approve of the first Saturn V
assembled in the Vertical Assembly Building (VAB) at KFC. The
venue is the Cincinnati North Holiday Inn in Sharonville. For more information and cost/menu/reservation details download the meeting flyer. |

AEP Lawrenceburg Combined Cycle Power Plant TourOn Wednesday
19 December 2007 a group of 22 Cincinnati Section members and guests were
treated to a tour of the Lawrenceburg (IN) Combined Cycle Power Plant. Following the 90-minute tour, most of
the group enjoyed a dinner at nearby Whiskey’s restaurant. Pictures from
the tour may be viewed and downloaded HERE. (the following
information is taken from the AEP fact sheet on the plant) Lawrenceburg Plant is a natural gas-fired, combined cycle power plant,
with nominal generating capacity of 1,096 megawatts (MW). The plant consists of four General
Electric (GE) 7FA gas combustion turbine generators (GTGs), four Aalborg heat
recovery steam generators (HRSGs), two GE model D11 condensing reheat steam
turbine generators (STGs) and other ancillary equipment. The plant is arranged in two similar
units, each with two gas turbine that each exhaust into an HRSG. Te steam from each unit’s HRSGs feeds
its respective steam turbine, enabling each unit efficiency to run in the top
tier of the generation industry. The plant primarily operates as an intermediate, load-following
plant. In general it operates
during the summer and winter peak periods when power is needed for eight or
more hours during the day – unlike the simple cycle gas turbines that operate
when peaking power is needed for shorter periods. AEP acquired Lawrenceburg Plant from an affiliate of Public Service
Enterprise Group in May 2007.
The plant began commercial operation in June 2004. Lawrenceburg Plant is owned by AEP
Generating Company and is operated and maintained by Indiana Michigan Power,
a unit of AEP. |
