Technical Tidbits

Wind Turbine at CWRU

In November 2010, a 100kW wind turbine was erected on the Case Western Reserve University campus.  Our CWRU student section (thanks K.J.!) provided this link to a time lapse movie showing the building of the wind turbine.  You may have to cut and paste the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tr169zvYOsM

Batteries at Painesville Power

Yesterday, Patrick Cleary and I visited the Painesville Municipal Power plant.  This plant has been in operation since 1908 and looks every bit of that.  However, there is also on the site a new building being erected which will contain a vanadium redox flow battery with a capacity of 1.08 MW.

We hope to sponsor a tour of the facility sometime this coming fall.

ASME Cleveland Section 2012 History and Heritage Program

A Biography of Garrett Morgan

Presented by: Chad Malkamaki of the Western Reserve Historical Society

Garrett A. Morgan, a prominent Cleveland businessman whose inventions changed America, reflects the American story.  Born and raised in Jim Crow Kentucky, Morgan migrated first to Cincinnati where he worked to further support his education.   Morgan arrived in Cleveland at the height of the Gilded Age in 1895 and while working as a sewing machine adjuster he created his first invention to fix sewing machines.   He branched out in 1907 as an entrepreneur with his own sewing machine repair shop.  Morgan created hair care products and a smokeless ashtray, but will forever be known for two inventions that transformed the twentieth century.  Morgan’s “Breathing Device” and “Traffic Signal” have saved countless lives and showed Morgan’s inventions as practical and Civic minded.  Later, Morgan was instrumental in the African American press in Cleveland.    Morgan’s story shows through education, hard work, and inspiration, what one can do to give back to society while struggling against racism and segregation.
