As gas prices go up, it is becoming more important to find ways to improve
gas mileage and reduce the cost of driving. How would you like to get
mileage three or four times what you now get?!! It isn't a dream - but a
reality - if you own the right vehicle. Come the 5th and see the sleek
Honda Insight. It is a very high-tech vehicle using lightweight materials
of construction and two power sources: gasoline and electricity. We will
have an Insight for you to look at and speakers who can explain how it
works. Michael Tebo, the Administrator of Corporate Affairs of the Honda of
America office in Washington, has agreed to fly in with one of his top
technical staff, John German, Manager of Environmental and Energy Analysis,
to tell us about this neat little car. This vehicle was developed and built
in Japan and imported to the United States and is the trend of the future.
The battery power propels the vehicle to speed; then a small gasoline engine
sustains the car when horsepower isn't needed. Most of the power is needed
to get the vehicle moving. The gasoline engine recharges the batteries as
the car cruises along. It's the first hybrid electric vehicle sold in the U.S.

April Program: History and Heritage
Program: History of Railroads in Northeast Ohio
Mark your calendars for the annual History
and Heritage Program to be held Thursday, April 27, 2000 at
the Pufferbelly Restaurant in Berea. Chris Dawson of the Western
Reserve Historical Society will discuss the importance of railroads
to the development of Northeast Ohio. Combined with Cleveland's
position on Lake Erie, the railroads have literally connected
Cleveland with the rest of the country and world, allowing Cleveland
industries to purchase raw materials cheaply from anywhere on the globe,
and send their products out to anywhere, while also attracting workers
from all over the world. While Lake Erie, and later, the Erie and Ohio
Canal were major contributers to Cleveland's early growth, it was the
railroads intertwined with major industries that turned Cleveland into
a metropolis.
Where: The Pufferbelly, 30 Depot Street, Berea. From I-480
near Hopkins Airport, take Freeway 237 south. Take a left onto Front
Street. Cross two sets of railroad tracks. Depot Street is first

The L-Series project began with clear
objectives - a "blueprint" that came courtesy of Saturn customers.
Although they are among the most loyal in the entire automotive
industry, many Saturn customers were ready for a vehicle that included
the key elements of the Saturn small cars and that precisely met their
changing needs:
- Dent-resistant bodyside panels. This design approach helps keep Saturn
vehicles looking new longer, aiding in resale value.
- Class-leading safety features, including excellent crash-test performance
and wide availability of safety features, such as anti-lock brakes and
traction control.
- Exceptional quality, reliability and durability.
- Low-cost of ownership, aided by a vehicle that is easy to repair when
necessary and parts that are reasonably priced.
- A high level of domestic content. American manufactured in partnership
with the UAW and key suppliers.
The quest to incorporate systems that are
best in class allowed Saturn to take advantage of the experience of a
global community. Technology used in the brakes is from General Motors
of Europe. The smooth-shifting five-speed manual transmission is from
Europe. The compact V6 engine also comes from General Motors of
Europe, where versions of the engine power flagships in several vehicle
lines. North America provides other world-class vehicle systems, such
as the automatic transmissions. And nobody knows more about polymer
body panels than Saturn's team members in Spring Hill. It was the
responsibility of Saturn engineers to orchestrate these systems to
create a unique, new vehicle in keeping with the key elements of the
Saturn brand.
Timothy C. Carleton joined Saturn Corporation
in 1995 as Assistant Vehicle Line Executive. He is responsible for the
development of the Saturn L-Series, mid-size vehicle line-up. Carleton
joined General Motors Corporation in 1965 as a Project/Design Engineer
at the Pontiac Motor Division. He held a number of positions of
increasing responsibility in the Pontiac Engineering organization over
the next several years. In 1983 he was named Engineering Program
Manager for the Pontiac Grand Am. In 1986 Carleton was promoted to
Business Team Manager for Pontiac small cars. In 1989 he was named
Director - L Car Planning at the Lansing Automotive Division and in
1992 Carleton became director of Validation in that organization.
Carleton holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering.

Vulcan's Forge: The Culture of Arms in Medieval and Renaissance
Europe
Special lecture provided for ASME by the Cleveland Museum of Art's curator
responsible for the Armor Court Exhibit restoration, Stephen Fliegel.
The lecture will be followed by free access to the Armor Court Exhibit
and the remainder of the museum's collections.
Vulcan's
Forge: The Culture of Arms in Medieval and Renaissance Europe. The
pervasive image of Europe's "Knight in Shining Armor" remains a potent
one to this very day. At its greatest, armor was "moving sculpture"
and a profound symbol of its owner's power and prestige. The
embellishment of armor accorded it status as "male body jewelry". This
lecture examines the multiple roles of arms and armor in our western
culture from warfare and tournament to its function as an extension of
the male attire. Over $1 million was spent restoring the Armor Court
and this past October the fruits of this labor of love were unveiled as
this exhibit was reopened to the public. Please join us to hear what
curator, Stephen Fliegel, has to say about this remarkable time in our
millenium's not so distant past. The fusion of art and mechanical
engineering doesn't get much closer than this subject!

November Program:
The Advanced X-Ray Astrophysical Facility (AXAF)
Jon M. Kriegel, Senior Development Engineer,
Commercial and Government Systems, Eastman Kodak Company, in Rochester,
New York, will speak to the Cleveland Section of ASME as part of ASME's
Distinguished Lecturer Program. This program is co-sponsored with
AIAA.
Date: Thursday, November 19th.
When: Starting at 6:00 P.M.
Where: Ohio Aerospace Institue - Library
Cost: $7.50 at the door
RSVP: Please call Kathy at CES (216)361-3100 to make a reservation.
Mr. Kriegel will discuss "The AXAF
Telescope". Eastman Kodak is under contract to design, assemble, and
test the optics for this orbiting satellite telescope, which will
follow the Hubble Space Telescope in the NASA Series called "The Great
Observatories". This X-Ray telescope is scheduled for launch in
December 1998 and will collect image information in the high-energy
range.
Instead of reflecting, X-Rays would pass
right through conventional glass mirrors, so this telescope utilizes
grazing-incidence optics to focus incident rays through a focal length
of 10 meters. ASAF is almost 40 feet long, 14 feet in diameter, and
weighs 10,000 pounds. The presentation will cover the technological
advances made in creating the most perfect reflective surfaces ever
produced; in establishing strain-free mounts for 400 pound mirrors; in
assembling and aligning multi-story components in Class-100 clean room
conditions; and other solutions which advanced the state-of-the-art in
mechanical engineering.
Due to Mr. Kriegel's very tight schedule,
this will not be a dinner meeting. Snacks (sandwich and vegetable
trays) and soft drinks will be served at 6:00 P.M. with Mr. Kriegel's
talk at 6:30. Please come early and meet your fellow ASME and AIAA
members.
