The Physics of Star Trek: Mobility in the Next Millennium
MONDAY, DECMBER 6, 1999
Talk given by Dr. Lawrence Krauss
Joint Society Meeting with AIAA, ASME, IEEE, SME, SAE
What better way to usher in the new millennium than a discussion on the future of mobility (fictional or realistic) presented by a local celebrity. Internationally known physicist and best selling author Lawrence Krauss will guide you on a journey through the Star Trek universe, which he uses as a launching pad to offer a glimpse of the fascinating world of modern physics. He applies the theories of Newton and Einstein for an entertaining analysis of warp drives, transporter beams, dilithium crystals, and time travel. Krauss is a seasoned lecturer with vast experience communicating his joy of physics to popular audiences. For Trekkers and non-Trekkers alike, this charming and accessible lecture will add a whole new dimension to your view of the Star Trek universe, and your appreciation of the universe in which we actually live.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Prof. Lawrence Krauss is a theoretical physicist with wide research interests, including the interface between elementary particle physics and cosmology, where his studies include the early universe, the nature of dark matter, general relativity and neutrino astrophysics. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1982), then held positions with the Harvard Society of Fellows and Yale University. In 1993 he was named the Ambrose Swasey Professor of Physics, Professor of Astronomy and Chairman of the Department of Physics at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Krauss is the author of over 170 scientific publications, as well as acclaimed popular books including ‘The Fifth Essence: The Search for Dark Matter in the Universe’, ‘Fear of Physics’, national bestseller ‘The Physics of Star Trek’, and ‘Beyond Star Trek’. He appears regularly on radio and television, and has been compared to the late Carl Sagan as a popularizer of science.
