The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON, Inc.), a nonprofit science corporation dedicated to understanding how changes in climate, land use and invasive species impact ecology, has an immediate opening for a Data Engineer. We are currently planning the NEON project, an observatory comprising more than 60 atmospheric, environmental and biological monitoring experiments distributed throughout twenty domains across the United States, Hawaii, Alaska & the Caribbean, monitored and controlled in real-time from our headquarters in Boulder, Colorado. A leading-edge flexible cyberinfrastructure is being designed to support current and future needs of the Observatory.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Required Experience
- BS Degree ME, EE
- 8-10 years Mechanical engineering design, analysis and prototyping experience, experience developing and analyzing structures and simple machines. Both machined and formed parts
- Vendor / supplier evaluation and relations
- Experience working with machine shops and metal fabrication and forming shops
- Drafting and design documentation creation .Expertise with AutoDesk CAD tools
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Highly organized and flexible with the ability to multitask.
- Full life cycle product development and good product design and manufacturing experience
Desired
- Design or analysis of tower structures
- Design of sensor mounts for use in remote data acquisition systems
- Design of building infrastructures (piping, electrical, gas runs, enclosures)
- Sensor evaluation, quality control and remote metrology experience
- An interest in climate ecology
- Ability and desire to work in both an office environment and outdoors
- Ability to climb tall towers – safety harnesses and training provided

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Position requires fully developed experience and proven technical capability in Mechanical Engineering including systems analysis, design and preparation of construction documents, cost estimating, scheduling and team leadership for facilities and industrial infrastructure projects. Areas of experience should include HVAC, Plumbing, Piping and Systems Controls. Must be knowledgeable in applicable codes and standards, including IBC, IMC, IFC, IFGC, IPC, IECC, NFPA, ASHRAE and SMACNA. Candidate must have complete understanding of professional design practices and document preparation, as well as be able to work within developed corporate standards. Familiarity with LEED program and/or AutoCAD are pluses. Candidate should also possess the ability to multi-task and support numerous projects concurrently, be a self-starter, highly motivated, with excellent interpersonal and communicative skills. A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Professional Engineering License in the State of Colorado are required. Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
This engineering position supports the design of power generation and industrial projects. Projects include simple cycle and combined cycle gas fired power plants; new and retrofit FGD systems; NOx control systems; Owners’ Engineer, and reciprocating engine projects.
Responsibilities
- Responsibilities include the design of steam and condensate systems, pumps, heat exchangers, cooling systems, piping and valves, water/wastewater treatment systems, and design interface with combustion turbines, HRSG’s and steam turbines.
- Specific responsibilities include preliminary and detailed system design engineering, equipment sizing, specification, and layout, and development of control schemes and P&ID’s. Responsibilities as a

- BS degree in mechanical engineering.
- Minimum of 8 years experience in power plant design, emissions control, or power plant operations.
- PE license preferred or willingness to obtain within 1 year.
- Occasional periods of travel to the field and industrial plants may be required.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
