ASME DELMARVA SUBSECTION MINUTES
February 8, 2000, 5:30 P.M.
UMES, Department of Technology
Ray Jackson, Bill Hargrove, Dr. Yilmaz, Dr. Nagchaudhuri, and
Student members: Mr. Mayzck (president), Mr. Balentine (projects
coordinator), Ms. Robinson (secretary) were present.
1. ASME UMES Student Chapter Chartering Ceremony (Feb. 24, 2000)
Chartering ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 24, 2000 at Oasis
dining room at 11:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M. at UMES. Dr. Boyd (Dean,
School of Business and Technology), Ray Jackson (New V.P. for
Eastern Region), Chairs of Technology Engineering/Airway
Science departments as well as students and members of DELMARVA
Subsection executive council shall be attending the ceremony.
DELMARVA Subsection members are strongly urged to attend the
ceremony to increase visibility of ASME and our Subsection. Media
shall be invited to cover the occasion. A special invitation
shall be sent to Dr. Spikes (UMES president) to invite her to the
activity. During the ceremony, Ray Jackson will also present
Subsection Charter to Bill Hargrove (Chair for DELMARVA Group).
2. Engineer's Week Activities
Engineers week is Feb. 21-27. Ray has contacted Thomas Edwards
(one of our members) to draft a press release to advertise
Engineers week in local newspapers.
Ray ordered and received some posters from ASME. Some posters
shall be passed to UMES Student Section for posting. Dr.
Nagchaudhuri mentioned that JETS/TEAM is involved in 9-12 grade
programs. Student members are encouraged to get involved with
local high schools.
3. Student Chapter Activities
ASME UMES Student section members have been meeting every other
week to draft a constitution and plan activities. On October 26,
1999 they visited Dupont Company in Wilmington. They will be
attending career fair on Feb. 19, 2000 in Baltimore Convention
Center. Ray urged students to be more active and recruit more
students. Current student membership in section is 13. Ray
suggested that students should contact Howard Berkoff (student
representative from Penn State) for any help they need.
Ray mentioned that there is no money available until July 1, 2000
to invite speakers for student activities.
4. Scheduling of Executive Council Elections
Proposed elections night is April 19 or 25th at Bonanza in
Delmar, DE. Most likely we shall have a speaker. Members are
requested to submit nominations or nominate themselves for all
positions: Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and
activities coordinators/chairs.
Bill nominated himself to stay as Chair, Ray nominated himself to
continue to be Treasurer and Thomas Edwards as Vice Chair, Dr.
Yilmaz nominated Andrew Groves as Secretary.
5. Other Activities
Regional Administrative Conference (RAC) is on May 11-13,
Bethlehem, PA. ASME covers expenses for two Executive Council
members.
Interim RAC (IRAC) is on Sept. 15-17 at Split Rock Resort,
Pocono, PA.
Regional Student Conference (RSC) is scheduled for April 7-9 at
Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. Dr. Nagchaudhuri or Dr. Yilmaz
will try to attend the RSC. Faculty advisor expenses and expenses
for competing team are paid by ASME. Ray mentioned that competing
team's membership fee for the upcoming year as well as their
first year regular member membership fee is paid when they become
regular member in ASME.
