The Eastern Virginia Section is comprised of approximately 600 ASME members from the Hampton Roads area in Virginia. The section hosts various events throughout the program year, including training courses, technical presentations, and design contests. In addition, the section supports local K-12 and college math, science, and engineering programs.

June 16 &17, 2009: Short Course:"Valve Selection for Optimum Performance":


Presented by:
ASME and  Mr. William Hayes, P.E.
President, W.R. Hayes Associates

This course provides an understanding of valves and how they interact for optimum system performance. Additionally, participants will receive expert guidance in making cost-effective decisions and tips for avoiding poor system operation.  Learn hydraulic theory as it applies to valves, as well as criteria for their selection.  1.5 CEUs; 15 PDHs

February 5, 2009: "AREVA - New Reactor Systems for the 21st Century":

Mr. Mathews will discuss the EPRTM  advanced nuclear plant design and AREVA's plans to deploy the design in commercial nuclear power plants in the U.S.

March 14, 2009: "2009 ASME/AIAA Egg Drop Design Competition":


Presented by:
ASME/AIAA/Nauticus

Join the fun at the 2009 ASME/AIAA Egg Drop Design Competition!  Designed to promote engineering and science for students, this competition is open to all ages.  Participants are asked to build a device to protect an egg from a second story (approximately 20 feet high) and third story (approximately 40 feet high) drop to keep it from going splat!  The lightest device that comes closest to the target while protecting the egg wins!  Eggs will be supplied at the contest.  Participation is FREE and prizes will be awarded for winners in each age group!

October 9, 2008: "New Requirements for Maintaining a PE License":

Presented by:
Mr. Ed Westerman, P.E.
President, Virginia Society of Professional Engineers

Mr. Westerman will discuss the anticipated changes to the APELSCIDLA Regulations regarding mandatory continuing education for Virginia-licensed design professionals and answering related questions. Continuing education requirements for Professional Engineers are expected to take effect in late 2009. Mr. Westerman is the current President of the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers. He is the Director of Structural Engineering for Clark Nexsen, an architectural and engineering firm headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia. If you are a Professional Engineer or are considering becoming licensed, this is a meeting you don't want to miss!
