Eastern Virginia Section – Past Programs


The Eastern Virginia Section is active in supporting the mechanical engineering profession.  The section hosts various events throughout the program year, including technical presentations and design contests, and supports local K-12 and college engineering programs.  The program year begins in July and ends in June.

SR-71 Blackbird:  An Engineering Marvel

Rich Graham, Col., USAF (Ret) presented an informative discussion on the capabilities of the Blackbird aircraft for gathering highly classified intelligence on hostile countries around the world.  Col. Graham took the group through a subconscious journey aboard the Blackbird as he discussed flying at Mach 3+ speeds and cruising at altitudes of over 85,000 feet .  He described how the SR-71 could survey over 100,000 square miles every hour while gathering millions of bits of intelligence.  This was a joint meeting of ASME, AIAA and ECVP and was attended by 95 members and guests.

St. George’s Brewing Co. Tour

 

Hampton, VA

Approximately 18 members and guests enjoyed a tour of St. George’s micro-brewing facilities on Thursday, September 21st.  The tour began with a description brewing terminology and the raw ingredients in beer and as well as taste testing of the brewery’s products.  The tour then provided information on how beer was brewed, bottled, and packaged at St. George's facility.  The group learned about the different products and specialty beers that make St. George’s brand famous.  The company has received numerous awards for the bold taste of their fine British Ales as well as their German and American style beers.

“Fastening Technology and Bolted/Screwed Joint Design” Training Course

There were 10 members and 22 guests that took advantage of Blendulf’s wealth of knowledge on fastening technology and bolted/screwed joint design.  Participants learned how to select the proper type of fastener, design bolted joints, calculate torque values, and much more.
