Members are encouraged to participate in National Engineers Week. Visit the web site at www.eweek.org to find out what's new this year including ways to participate in the Discover Engineering interactive telecast. Visit the web site www.greatachievements.org for useful information about great engineering achievements of the past 100 years. Visit www.discoverengineering.org to learn how to promote engineering to middle school students. Local activities include the Erie Engineering Societies Council Industrial Expo at the Tulio Convention Center. You may also want to contact a middle school or high school guidance counselor to offer to talk to students about Mechanical Engineering. Engineering & You brochures or an Engineers Week video are available for the guidance office. To learn about other ways to get involved, contact

Special Message from the Erie Section

Congratulations to Dr. Mahesh Aggarwal from our Erie Section for being elected to serve a three term as Vice President of ASME Region V. We are looking forward to working under his leadership. Please give him your support and encouragement for this important and prestigious position in the ASME.

Message from the Chairman

We have a couple of interesting dinner meetings this spring. In March, students from Gannon and Behrend will be presenting papers on their capstone senior design projects. In April, Dr. Dan Inman from Virginia Tech will be speaking on the cutting edge research being performed in the area of smart structures and vibration. The Erie Section is looking for volunteers to serve on the executive committee. This is a great opportunity to experience how the Erie section works into the overall scheme of the ASME. If you have any questions or comments about our section, please contact me. Thanks for your support.

Mike Panza
Chairman of the ASME Erie Section

ASME BENEFITS

Take advantage of the many ASME benefits available to members. The large group buying power of the ASME provides for competitive prices for benefits that normally your company may not provide. As an example, consider the term life insurance administered by ASME and underwritten by New York Life Insurance Company. Or consider the several long term extra health insurance options that are offered. The ASME sponsored investment options are also worth investigating. Details on these and many other useful benefits may be found on the ASME National Web Site www.asme.org under Membership and Benefits and the Personal Financial Passport link.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE ERIE AREA

Current research and development by ASME members in the Erie area has not received the recognition it has deserved. The Erie Section would like to acknowledge work in these areas by listing it our newsletter. So, if you have written a technical type of paper for a journal, conference presentation, non-confidential company or government report, or other similar publication the past couple of years or was awarded a patent recently, please send me the information (title, publisher, description, etc.) so that we recognize it here. I think this may be a good way of showing the high quality of work being performed by ASME members in the our area. I believe these contributions should not be hidden. I have received a few submittals and will start putting them in the newsletter next month.

Thank You, Mike Panza, Erie Section Chair
