Lieutenant Commander Markowicz was born in Groton,
Connecticut and entered the Navy in 1992 after receiving a commission from the
Tufts University-MIT Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program. His undergraduate degree was awarded in
Mechanical Engineering.
Lieutenant Commander Markowicz’s initial sea tour was in San Diego, CA
aboard the Spruance Class Destroyer USS ELLIOT (DD 967) as the Damage Control
Assistant. During this division officer
tour, Lieutenant Commander Markowicz completed a Western Pacific and Arabian
Gulf deployment. Lieutenant Commander Markowicz was subsequently assigned
overseas to the Commander, TASK FORCE SIX SEVEN in Naples, Italy. There he served as the Operations
Administration Officer on an Admiral’s staff.
Lieutenant Commander Markowicz was also detailed to duty in Sarajevo,
Bosnia-Herzegovina in support of Operation JOINT GUARD. He was selected for lateral transfer to the
Engineering Duty Officer community prior to transferring from the Naples staff.
Lieutenant Commander Markowicz went on to Monterey, CA for his graduate
education at the Naval Postgraduate School in the department of Mechanical
Engineering. He successfully fulfilled
the requirements for a Masters and Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering
and graduated with distinction. His
thesis involved research in improving the infrared suppression systems for
marine gas turbine exhausts. He
reported in December 2001, for his initial engineering qualification tour at
Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
Lieutenant Commander Markowicz is a member of the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers and the American Society of Naval Engineers. He recently attended the International Gas
Turbine Institute’s 2003 Turbo Expo to present a paper that he co-authored and
titled “An Improved Preliminary Design
Method for Ejectors”. He is also registered Professional Engineer in the
state of California.
Lieutenant Commander Markowicz has enjoyed a year of service as President
of the local Battleship Missouri Toastmasters Club and continues to be an
active member.
Lieutenant Commander Markowicz is married to the former Kristin Bache of
San Diego, California. They currently
reside in Aiea, Hawaii with their two sons, John and Joseph. The family enjoys
hiking and discovering the Hawaiian Islands.
