ASME HAWAII P.E. REFRESHER COURSE COMPLETED

The ASME Hawaii Section P.E. refresher course for the October 2009 exam is finally completed.  The candidates for the fall exam include mechanical engineers employed in naval hull design, petroleum/refinery and the construction/building consulting industries.  Also, for the first time since resuming the refresher course in 2006, the section reached a milestone event when it enrolled two female P.E. candidates in the refresher course which truly represents the diversity in the mechanical engineering profession.

Another milestone event occurred when a petroleum/refinery industry professional was invited to provide instructions on the topic of electricity and electrical equipment during the last week of instructions.  Having extensive experience in the petroleum/refinery operations and licensed in both the mechanical and electrical disciplines, the instructor communicated the application of the chapter topics in terms of real world applications.

At the final review meeting of October 20, 2009, all seven candidates were presented their certificates of completion by past chairman Raymond Liu.  The candidates also presented gifts to instructors Dr. C. Kinoshita, Dr. S. Masutani and Mr. R. Kurasaki for their generous donation of their time to provide volunteer instructional services to promote and perpetuate the mechanical engineering profession.

Since 2006, the ASME Hawaii section conducts the P.E. refresher course which helps qualified mechanical engineers working in the profession to prepare for the Principles & Practice of engineering exam in the mechanical discipline, usually held in April and October of each year.  To date, the section has helped over 40 plus qualified mechanical engineering candidates prepare for professional registration in the state of Hawaii and California.  Qualified candidates include those individuals who have worked a minimum of four years under a licensed mechanical engineer on a full time basis.

Originally founded by Mr. Guy Pasco, P.E., Supervisory Mechanical Engineer in the Power Supply Engineering Department at Hawaiian Electric Company, the course is taught by practicing licensed mechanical engineers who generously volunteer their time and knowledge to further the mechanical engineering profession.  Meeting facilities are generously provided by the University of Hawaii, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.

The ASME Hawaii section would like to thank Dr. C. Kinoshita, P.E., Dr. S. Masutani, P.E., Mr. Ryan Kurasaki, P.E. and the staff of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources for volunteering time, effort and the use of facilities to make the P.E. refresher course possible.
