Ladies and Gentlemen:
The Holston Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers is once again sponsoring an Educational Initiatives Program in our region. It is our goal to support and promote technical training for students, K-12, so that they may be inspired to pursue a career in a technical field. The issuing of grants to schools in the Southwest Virginia/East Tennessee area is an important part of the program. Grants will be awarded to provide additional funding for math and science focused education. These grants are being made available to fund or supplement projects that provide further student exposure to scientific and mathematical studies in the classroom where they would not otherwise be provided by the school system. In the past, ASME has been able to award grants in the range of $500 to $1000.
We invite you to fill out the application on our website at Grant Application with a proposal for your school. Applications will be judged on how well the project outline demonstrates that the funding will be used to support the goals of the Educational Initiatives Program. This grant may be used in either the 2009-10 or the 2010-11 school year. Several examples of eligible proposals are design competitions, science fairs, classroom project/resource materials, science or math software, etc. A committee will review the applications and may visit the school as part of the selection process. Recipients will also be invited to an awards reception hosted by the Holston Section of ASME for the awarding of grants. We look forward to assisting you in your pursuit of educational excellence.
All applications must be received by March 19, 2010. The awards winners will be notified in April and awards will be made in May. Late applications will not be considered. Applications can be downloaded from the website and emailed to ccarvajal@eastman.com. If email is not available, the application can be mailed to:

ASME Holston Section is seeking member support for the 2010 Northeast Tennessee Science Bowl competition. The annual competition, initiate locally 2 years ago by Holston Section, will begin early planning activities leading up to the February 2010 competition. Volunteers are needed as judges, scorekeepers, moderators, timekeepers, school liaison and competitive question development. Anyone interested in supporting the competition should contact Larry Bailey (labailey@eastman.com) 423-224-0945.

Ashley Williams, a local Girl Scout, is planning a ‘Female Empowerment in the Field of Engineering Day’. It will be held at Girls Incorporated in Kingsport on Saturday, February 6, 2010 between 10:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. The program is designed to interest girls in math, science, and engineering outside of school. Ashley plans to develop the activities listed below, but she needs approximately 26 volunteers total to help execute them.

The ASME Holston Section requests your help as a volunteer for this event. Additionally, if we can supply Ashley with a Key Contact who can coordinate volunteers from ASME and other local engineering societies, we could come up with the required number of volunteers to make this a successful project for Ashley and the Girl Scouts.

The ASME-Holston Section will be hosting a lunch meeting on January 20th at 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at Rush Street Neighborhood Grill . They will have their buffet ready to go for us.
