Fossil Fuels of Alabama
Dr. Charles Haynes will be speaking about fossil energy sources in Alabama. Dr. Charles D. (“Charlie”) Haynes is a mineral consultant practicing primarily in the State of Alabama. He holds degrees in mining and petroleum engineering and has spent 52 years in mineral-related industry, academics, and consulting. He is a licensed P.E. in Alabama and served on its board of licensure from 2002-2007. Since 2006 he has been an outside director of a public natural gas company based in Houston, Texas.

Charlie will address the following topics in his presentation:
• The occurrence of “conventional” fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal) in Alabama, briefly reviewing their development.
• Alabama’s position in USA fossil fuel resources and production.
• Relatively recent activities in the production of natural gas from organic shales and coalbed methane (“unconventional energy”).
• Future coal resources development in Alabama.
•Future oil and gas resources in Alabama dependent on advanced technologies.

This meeting is the annual joint society meeting with members of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) sponsored by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) this year.

ENERGY AND WATER CONSERVATION at MSFC
Juergen Haukohl presented MSFC’s Energy Plan, its energy and water consumption trends, opportunities for goal compliance, and the ever-changing target for energy and water conservation correlated with various presidential Executive Orders and Energy Acts.
October 7th
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama, Inc.
Jason Godwin presented an overview of operations at Toyota’s engine manufacturing plant, covering the products they currently make and the changes that are taking place in anticipation of adding a four-cylinder engine line to current operations.

The Magnificent 7: Key Discoveries from Currently Orbiting NASA Satellites
At our September meeting, Dr. Gaskin introduced the Section to the many different “telescopes” that NASA has in orbit around the earth and their many contributions to our understanding of both the universe and our planet.
