Karen called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm

New Meeting Time and Day of the Week to Meet.

It was unanimously agreed that a starting time of 7:30pm is easier to attend, in view of traffic difficulties and eating supper.  The next meeting will observe this consensus and start at 7:30pm.

Karen suggested that we review the tradition of meeting on Wednesday.
Would a different night of the week be better?  Comments from members are invited.

In terms of reserving a room or the lecture hall at Fairleigh Dickinson, Friday is the best day.
Tuesday is the worst.  Meeting at FDU is best for our Chair, Karen.  She must commute from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she is an executive.

The Bergen Passaic Subsection will experiment with holding dinner meetings.
They hope this will attract greater participation.  The next Subsection meeting will be at Charlie Browns in East Rutherford at 7:00pm on April 9th.  [395 Paterson Plank Road, (201)842-9999].
If we hold Section dinner meetings, they would be at 7:00pm, rather than 7:30pm.

Website and Webmaster

John Melin, the Region II Webmaster is now posting items through the region II domain.  He posted the notice of the Engineers Week Dinner for us.
Submissions will be sent to him by Karen Ohland.  She will be the point person for all submissions.  We will take over postings ourselves as soon as possible.  John uses  Microsoft Front Page to insert postings.  He recommends that we learn how to use Front Page by taking the online course offered by ed2go.  The Course runs 6 weeks.  Each week, a lesson is transmitted.
A student has a week to respond for tutorial comments.  The course costs $60.  It is accessed through http://www.ed2go.com/jackson.  The next series starts April 9. See Course # CE011701.

Lisa Laplante, Sid Goodman, and Richard Dolinsky volunteered to take the course.  We wish  to have more than one person share the load of website preparation.
Karen will purchase 3 copies of Front Page 2002 (the latest version of Front Page), for these volunteers.

The cost of course subscription will be reimbursed by the Section.

What is most exciting, is that  Pablo Ospina (ospinapablo@asme.org) already knows Front Page.  He volunteers to be our webmaster.

Submissions to the Website by people who do not have Front Page can be made in the form of a Microsoft Word document.  Front Page will take a Word document and accept it, without the nuisance of html codes.

Before items are posted on the site, they should be proof read.
This can be done by e-mailing  copies to the new website committee.

Committee E-mail addresses are:

Karen Ohland (ohlandk@asme.org)
Lisa Laplante (llaplant@nji.com)
Richard Dolinsky (dolinskyr@asme.org)
Sid Goodman (sjgdesin@mindspring.com)
Pablo Ospina - webmaster (ospinapablo@asme.org)

Items destined for the Website:

  • Programs and announcements.

  • Section Minutes.

  • Announcements from Subsections, including minutes.

  • Announcements and programs from Student Sections.

  • Joint programs with other Technical Societies.

  • List of officers and how to contact them.

Student Sections are invited to post items.  Student Section Advisors are asked to notify Student Sections that their postings are welcome, and their participation in Section activities is equally welcome.

Address of the North Jersey Section Website:

As soon as possible, new entries will be posted.

Treasury Report:

No formal report.  We still need to get sign-off papers for our Certificates of Deposit from Keith Olasin.  A formal treasury report will be submitted to ASME headquarters to complete our annual report to them.

Karen is temporarily handling the vacant Treasurer’s position.  Karen has sign off authority for Checks.  Sid is a back-up signatory.

We hope that one of our members will step up to the plate and assume the Treasurer’s position.

Rebuilding Together April 26

This is a one day participation in a Habit For Humanity type of rebuilding.  Contact Lisa Laplante to participate.

In prior years, many of our members pitched in and found it a rewarding, fun experience.  Lisa’s E-mail is given above.  Her phone number is (973)872-2182.

Regional Student Conference

April 5th West Point Military Academy.
Karen, Lisa, and Iggy will be judges.  Anyone wishing to attend must register with Susan Lavigne at our ASME office.  This is for security purposes.  Contact Susan at (800)628-5981 or lavignes@asme.org .

FIRST robotics competion at Rutgers:  April 5th

Demonstration of Autodesk’s Inventor

Inventor is Autodesk’s  user friendly CAD software for parametric solid modeling and assembly.  A demonstration of its capabilities will be given on April 29 at Kraft Headquarters at 7:00 pm. Details will be put in our website.

Joint Technical Society Meetings

We will arrange joint meetings with other technical societies.  Information will be posted on our website.

At the moment, there are two programs being hosted by the Newark Society of Plastics Engineers which may be of interest.

On April 10th a Hot Runner Symposium will be held at the Pines Manor in Edison, NJ.  There will be four speakers.
A Table Top Mini Show will be presented.  Registration may be made by going to their website http://www.newarkspe.org
The website gives directions and their meeting schedule.

Another SPE program is their annual Golf Outing-Awards Dinner at the Beaver Brook Country Club in June.  Consult their website for details.

Sid Goodman is attempting to get  programs by the IEEE and the ISA.

Tour of the Battleship New Jersey: April 26, 2003.

Information will be posted on our website.

Future Possible Programs:

Tour of metal enhancement facility.  Curtiss-Wright has a metal improvement facility in Paramus, NJ.  General Magnaplate has a facility in Linden, NJ.  Sid will investigate.

Celebration of the first aircraft flight and early aviation history.  Beal Moore will investigate.

We Still Need:

…A Chairperson for the Morris/Sussex Subsection
…A Newsletter editor.   A newsletter can be put on the Website.
…A Treasurer

Please step forward if you are able to help.  If you can recommend someone who is willing, please let us know.  We are recovering from the blow of having our former Chair, Webmaster, and Newsletter Editor Treasurer resign.  Ouch! Is Murphy’s Law legal?

Honors and Awards Dinner:

The date must be firmed up.  We were hoping to arrange a special award to PSE&G in Honors Awards Dinner due to some complications.  Karen will get advice from Norris Allman.

We expect to hold this dinner at the Hanover Manor, at the end of May.

The Hanover Manor gave us excellent value for the Engineering Week Dinner.

Next Section Meeting:

April 30th at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck.  See the FDU website for directions.  Time: 7:30 pm.
