Next Section Meeting:

May 27th, Tuesday
Planning for the new season
Kraft Headquarters, 7 Campus Drive, Parsippany
At 7:30pm.

This will be a combination meeting of the Section and the Bergen/Passaic subsection.  The originally planned Subsection meeting for May 14th has been cancelled.

Karen thought that we ought to try meeting on a different night than Wednesday, and  meet this time In Parsippany for the convenience of members living in that region.

Programs:

We have scheduled two Section programs that were announced on a mailing to all members.

  • Demonstration of Inventor, May 13th

  • Metal Improvement of Shot Peening, June 12th.

  • See  the mailing and our web page for further information

Additional Region II programs are also listed on our website.
    They are:

  • Microfluidic/Biosensor Workshop at the University of Pennsylvania, on June 5th, and

  • Forum on Nanotechnology at NYU, on June 20.

  • Sid said he would investigate scheduling another program on metal improvement, using a different surface treatment technique.  He will contact Magnaplate Corporation.

    Website and Webmaster:

Pablo Ospina has created our new website.  It was unanimously praised.

    His e-mail address is ospinapablo@asme.org.

Karen is ordering software for Front Page 2002 for Lisa Laplante and Sid Goodman.  Richard Dolinsky’s computer has special needs.  He will buy the Front Page 2002 version for his machine.  He will be reimbursed.

We want to teach people how to manage a Website to back-up Pablo and support his efforts.

The recipients of software will take online courses from http://www.ed2go.com/jacksonThey will be reimbursed for the cost (approx. $60). The Course runs 6 weeks.  Each week, a lesson is transmitted.  A student has a week to respond for tutorial comments.

Submissions to the Website by members or student chapters who do not have Front Page can be made in the form of a Microsoft Word document.  Before items are posted on the site, they must be proof read.  Submit e-mail  articles to…

    Lisa Laplante llaplant@nji.com
    Richard Dolinsky dolinskyr@asme.org
    Sid Goodman sjgdesin@mindspring.com

Final approval of submissions will be made by

    Karen Ohland Karen.ohland@metmuseum.org

Karen will prepare a welcome memo for the website.
Special articles for the website are welcome.

Beal Moore will prepare an article on the history of aviation in New Jersey.  He is going to the Rhinebeck Aerodrome, NY to take pictures of historic aircraft.

A suggested item for the web site is the 100 Questions Series of Courses...

100 Questions - Online Mechanical Engineering Courses:

Each topic is presented in an interactive computer-based format.

ASME members may obtain access to these programs.  For information, contact, Tom Kuehl, Continuing Education, at kuehit@asme.org or (212) 591-8013.

     The topics are:

  • Structural Integrity and Stress Concentration

  • Mechanical Properties of Materials

  • Fracture Mechanics

  • Composites

  • Welds

  • Strength of Materials

  • Structural Safety

  • Theory of Elasticity

  • Treasury Report:

No formal report.  We still need to get sign-off papers for our Certificates of Deposit from Keith Olasin.  A formal treasury report will be submitted to ASME headquarters to complete our annual report to them.

Karen is temporarily handling the vacant Treasurer’s position.  Karen has sign off authority for Checks.  Sid is a back-up signatory.

We hope that one of our members will assume the Treasurer’s position.

    Training Trainers:

There will be a semi-annual meeting for training trainers June 13th to June 15th in Atlanta, Georgia.

This is to train trainers for regional student groups and for administrative conferences.

Anyone interested in becoming a trainer should contact Karen.

    Her e-mail address Karen.ohland@metmuseum.org.

    Rebuilding Together April 26:

This is a one-day participation in a Habit For Humanity type of rebuilding.

Contact Lisa Laplante to participate.  In prior years, many of our members pitched in and found it a rewarding, fun experience.  Lisa’s E-mail is given above.

Her phone number is (973) 872-2182.

    Report of Regional Student Conference
[April 5th West Point Military Academy.]

Several members from the ASME North Jersey Section were judges

…Karen Ohland, Head judge in design competition
    …Lisa Laplante, Posters
…Iggy D’Agati, Oral presentation of papers
…Richard Dolinsky, Measurement of designs to qualify against specification rules.

The design competition involved moving (simulated) “ore” up a 60% incline, using the potential energy from 2 liters of water, dumping the “ore” into a prescribed hole.

There was great variety in the competing designs.

Three teams came from the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico.

Most teams stayed until 7pm, an expression of enthusiasm.

Report of FIRST robotics competition at Rutgers
    [April 5th]:

Richard Dolinsky was a scorekeeper and a Master of Ceremonies in training.

44 High School teams participated at a Rutgers University Gym.

Teams are paired off to see which robot can best meet a specific goal.

Each team needs community sponsorship to pay for the $5,000 kit, to build a robot.

Some NJ corporations were sponsors.  The winning team goes to a national competition in Florida, requiring a possible total sponsorship cost of  $25,000.

In previous competitions, technical society banners were displayed.  There were no banners this time.

Richard will prepare an article for the Website, asking for involvement by individuals or businesses interested in helping or sponsoring the next competition.

Beal suggested that Richard solicit interest from the principal of the Wyckoff High School.

This principal was an engineer.  Richard will follow up.

Slate of Section Directors for Next Year:

We need to fill vacant positions and confirm continued service or new service for…

    …Chair
    …Treasurer
    …Secretary
    …Bergen/Passaic Subsection Chair
    …Morris/Sussex Subsection Chair
    …Essex/Hudson Subsection Chair

Presently vacant positions are Section Treasurer and Morris/Sussex Subsection Chair

Please think about volunteering for one of these positions.

    Honors and Awards Dinner:

The date must be firmed up.  Karen Ohland  phoned Arnold Pristernik, asking  which date he prefers.

The proposed dates are June 24th, June 25th, or June 26th.

Richard Dolinsky will check the availability of the Hanover Manor for these dates.

The Hanover Manor gave us excellent value for the Engineering Week Dinner.

Karen will ask Arnold to prepare the invitations with the help of Bud Foster (who volunteered.)  Invitees will include 25, 35, and 50 year members, past chairs, and present Section Directors.

    Special Award to PSE&G:

We hoped to present a special award to PSE&G at the Honors and Awards Dinner.  This is not feasible.

The award recognizes their 100th anniversary and support of ASME.  Karen will contact Norris Allman to see if we can arrange a special award presentation on the premises of PSE&G.  She will also ask him to find a PSE&G employee who will help, and arrange for publicity by the ASME publicity professionals.

    Summer Picnic:

We would like to arrange a picnic on July 19th with a rain date of July 26th.

Beal Moore will check the availability and reservation of picnic tables at Shepard Lake, where there is swimming and boat rentals.  He will also check the Rhinebeck Aerodrome when he goes there to take pictures of historic airplanes.

Richard Dolinsky will check the reservation of picnic tables at Bear Mountain, where there are boat rentals and walking/hiking paths with spectacular views.

Bud Foster will check  the reservation of tables at Lake Hopatcong.

We will make a selection from these at the next Section meeting.
