Treasurer’s Report:
Karen reported we currently have $12,150.56 in our checking account.
Karen will prepare the treasury report for last year, required by ASME headquarters.
Arnold Pristernik, our new Treasurer for the new year, will prepare future treasury reports...
Reports Due:
Karen will prepare the Section program report for last year. She will ask Richard Dolinsky
to prepare the Bergen/Passaic Subsection program report and Boris Khusid to prepare the
Essex/Hudson Subsection program report.
Section Picnic at Tomohawk Lake held on July 19th:
At least 51 people attended. A good time was had by all except a child who bloodied
her knee, which prevented her from going swimming. A brief summary of the event will be posted on our Section Website.
Beal Moore showed photos he took and distributed copies.
Distinguished Lecturer Program:
Karen distributed a description of the program proposed by ASME Distinguished
Lecturer Ian M. Arbon. His lecture is on renewable energy. He stresses the importance
of avoiding pitfalls, corporate social responsibility, and the triple bottom line. Karen asked
if this lecture would be of interest to us. We definitely agreed that it was of interest. She will
try to arrange a program in November or in the Spring, when Ian will be in the area (traveling from Great Britain).
Visit to U.S. Testing Laboratory Program:
Beal Moore reported that the U.S. Testing Laboratory is interested in hosting a tour by our Section.
The laboratory wants to know the date we want. He will tell them that the following dates are open.
October 15, 22, 23, 27, 30, and November 3, 5, 12, or 13. We prefer the latest date possible for
more lead time. This will probably be a dinner meeting, where we will meet for dinner at a nearby
restaurant and then go to the laboratory. Karen suggested three restaurants: Bruschetta Ristorante,
Charlie Browns, and La Cocina.
Speaker for Engineers Week Dinner - February 19, 2004:
We intend to select a speaker as soon as possible. The particular speaker has not yet
been firmed up. Suggestions are welcome.
Planned Date for Honors and Awards Dinner - June 10, 2004
Possible future programs:
- …Management/Consulting/Starting a business - Panel discussion? Karen will ask
Dick Touma if he would be willing to put together a program. Possible panelists might
include Brian Boden (manager at Kraft), a representative from the Small Business
Administration, or Iggy D’Agati who established a business.
- Engineering Design/Inventions. Karen will ask Boris Khusid to recommend a professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Beal will ask Larry Schmerzler
to recommend a speaker. Larry, a retired engineering professor has been involved with an inventor’s society. Larry was in a university project which designed a hybrid automotive engine, long before the concept became popular.
- Picatinny Arsenal. Bud Foster will ask people at the Arsenal if they are willing
to present a program.
- Visit to Sterling Mine and wine tasting event.
Lisa Laplante will look into planning these events. Our previous visit to the Sterling Mine prompted suggestions that
we do it again. Lisa previously arranged a successful visit to a micro beer producer.
- Plan a picnic for next year, in view of the success of the one we just had. Places to
consider might include Space Farms, Van Saun Park, Darlington, Park, Monroe
Village.
Suggestions are welcome.
- Tour of Kodalux in Fair Lawn, NJ
