Next Section Meeting:
October 14, Tuesday
Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), 1000 River Road, Teaneck,
Muscarelle building
At 7:30pm. See the FDU website for directions
http://www.fdu.edu
Note: this is a change from previous scheduling. Boris teaches a class on
Thursday nights and cannot attend Thursday meetings. Whether we make holding
Section meetings on exclusively on Tuesday nights remains to be determined.
Treasurer’s Report:
None at this meeting.
Section Picnic for next summer:
After considering alternatives, the consensus was to hold a picnic at Swartzwood Park,
in the general Newton, NJ area. Richard Dolinsky agreed to arrange a reservation for
next July, preferably on a Saturday, with a Sunday as a second choice.
The park offers swimming, boating, and fishing. It has a concession stand.
Richard will find out whether the park can provide a catered meal. He will reserve a picnic area for about 50 people.
Distinguished Lecturer Program/Engineering Week Keynote Speaker:
Karen has been in touch with Gregory T. Lenteris PhD.
He offers a lecture called “Fire in Space”. From his experience in space missions his talk covers what happened when fires occurred.
Karen is trying to arrange his appearance as our keynote speaker at the next Engineering Week Dinner.
The date of the dinner will be adjusted to suit his availability.
As a backup speaker, Beal Moore recommended Glenn Corbett. Engineer Corbett is on
the commission which is investigating the fires which destroyed the World Trade Center.
He is developing revised specifications for the construction of high rise buildings.
Visit to U.S. Testing Laboratory Program:
Beal Moore reported that the U.S. Testing Laboratory agreed to give us a tour of their Lab on the
evening of November 13th. The laboratory supervisor, Frank Servino prefers to have the tour start at 9:30pm.
We felt that is much too late. Beal will ask for an earlier start, preferably 8:00 pm or 8:30pm.
He will find the best restaurant near the lab. We will have supper before the tour. He will provide the information
necessary for notifying our members of this program. The laboratory person making arrangements,
is Marylou Lescala. Her phone number is (973)575-5252. If we cannot have a starting time no later
than 8:30 pm, we may cancel this program.
Planned Date for Honors and Awards Dinner:
June 10, 2004
Possible future programs:
- Management/Consulting/Starting a business – Dick Touma agreed to coordinate a discussion. Brian Boden (a manager at Kraft) and Iggy D’Agati (established a successful business) agreed to serve as panelists. It was thought that having a representative from the Small Business Adminstration , might be interesting.
- Engineering Design/Inventions. Boris said he will ask professors at the New Jersey Institute of
Technology if they are willing to present a program. Sid will follow up with Boris.
Beal will ask Larry Schmerzler to recommend a speaker from the inventor’s society he
has been involved with. Larry, a retired engineering professor, was in a university project
that designed a hybrid automotive engine. This was long before the concept became popular.
- Picatinny Arsenal - Sid will follow up with Bud Foster.
We would like Bud to ask people at the Arsenal if they are willing to present a program. Bud retired from the Arsenal.
- Visit to Sterling Mine and wine tasting event. Lisa Laplante will look into planning this.
- Tour of Kodalux in Fair Lawn, NJ – Arnold Pristinik is making inquiries.
ASME Diversity Action Grants:
Diversity and outreach grants are available from the ASME.
These grants help the enrollment of minority groups in the study of engineering.
Karen will notify NJIT, Stevens Institute, and FDU about grants for the 2003-2004 academic year.
Engineering Forums – Proposed by Dick Touma:
Dick explained wants to try engineering forums which take place during the day. The forums target engineers
who are unable to attend evening programs. These forums will provide a speaker for a topic.
An interactive discussion will follow each presentation. He hopes that the model program he is developing, will be
successful enough for other ASME Sections to adopt. He is attempting to obtain speakers for topics
such as The Future of Engineering Careers in the Biomedical
Industry, and Is There a Role for Engineers In the Pharmaceutical Industry?.
Other topics may be on personal finances or discussions on politics. He would like to encourage engineers of different disciplines and their friends to attend.
Other ASME Programs:
Burt Dicht is planning an October 15th Seminar on how to organize and run a Professional Development Seminar.
Contact ASME headquarters for further information.
