Treasurer’s Report

Review of assets by Karen indicates that we will be able to give

student awards again, as we did last year.  (1) $1,000 & (2) $500 awards will be given, based on student activity in ASME and their grades.  The awards will be given at the Engineering Week Dinner, this February.

Section Picnic for next summer:

Richard Dolinsky will make  a reservation for Swartzwood Part next July, preferably on a Saturday, with a Sunday as a second choice.
The park offers swimming, boating, and fishing.  It has a concession stand.  Richard will find out whether the park can provide a catered meal.
He will reserve a picnic area for about 50 people.

Distinguished Lecturer Program/Engineering Week Keynote Speaker:

Gregory T. Lenteris PhD. will be our keynote speaker. His  lecture “Fire in Space” is based on his  experience in space missions.  His talk covers what happened when fires occurred.
To suit his availability, the date for the Engineering Week Dinner is tentatively set for Thursday, February 12. This tentative date will be confirmed.  If confirmed, the Section meeting,
which had been scheduled for that evening will shifted to a different date.

Visit to U.S. Testing Laboratory Program

The U.S. Testing Laboratory will  give us a tour of their Lab on the evening of November 13th.
The tour will start at 7:30 pm.  The Lab will serve sandwiches and refreshments.

Our  Website will provide details, ASAP.  See Sid’s publisher’s website, using the search words “Asleep at the Geiger Counter”.

Possible future programs

  • Management/Consulting/Starting a business – Dick Touma will coordinate a discussion. Brian Boden (a manager at Kraft) and Iggy D’Agati (established a successful business) agreed to serve as panelists.

  • Engineering Design/Inventions. Boris said he will ask professors at the New Jersey Institute of Technology if they are willing to present a program.
Beal will ask Larry Schmerzler  to recommend a speaker from the inventor’s society he has been involved with.  Larry, a retired engineering professor,  was in a university project that  designed a hybrid  automotive engine.  This was long before the concept became popular.

  • Picatinny Arsenal - We have asked Bud Foster  to ask people at the Arsenal if they are willing  to present a program. Bud knows employees there.

  • Visit to Sterling Mine and wine tasting event.  Lisa Laplante will look into planning this.

  • Tour of Kodalux in Fair Lawn, NJ – Arnold Pristinik will make  inquiries

  • Aviation Museum program?

  • Prof. James Howard presentation?-  Creativity and Industrial Design?

  • Meadowlands, behind the scene/and or talk by Riverkeeper Bill Sheehan?

  • Presentation by Glenn Corbett, revised construction specifications for high rise buildings?

Habitat for Humanity

The Habitat is seeking volunteers for Paterson construction.  They need volunteers for November 29, December 13, 20, & 27, and every Saturday in January.  Contact Lisa Laplante if you are interested (phone: 973-872-2182) or llaplant@nji.com)

Fairleigh Dickinson Student’s  Team Came in 2nd Place in Competition

Melvin Lewis, lecturer at FDU,  reported that FDU students participated in a student competition at the MCAA Student Chapter Summit in Milwaukee, WI. MCAA is the Mechanical Contracting Association of America. The Summit featured a panel session on how to make a successful project proposal, and had a tour of the Kohler factory (manufacturer of bath and kitchen fixtures).  The competition challenge was a proposal to renovate the upper story of a dual use building, with emphasis on the HVAC system.
The team that came in 2nd place had two FDU students in it, along with participants from  other schools.
There were 125 representatives from academia, industry and MCAA at the symposium.

Engineering Forums – Proposed by Dick Touma

Dick wants to try engineering forums which take place during the day. The forums target engineers who are unable to attend evening programs. These forums will provide a speaker for a topic.
An interactive discussion will follow each presentation.  He hopes that the model program he is developing,
will be successful enough for  other ASME Sections to adopt. .  He is attempting to obtain speakers for topics such as The Future of Engineering Careers in the Biomedical Industry, and Is There a Role for Engineers In the Pharmaceutical Industry?
Other topics may be on personal finances or discussions on politics. Contact Dick if you would like to be involved at  201-837-5287.
