at http://www.asme.org/regions/nero/R2_RAC_2004.htm.
Regional Student Conference April 24th:
This will be a one day event which will involve a student design competiton.
Please contact Karen Ohland if you are interested in being a design judge. Her e-mail is
ohlandk@asme.org.
Beal Moore Recognized as an ASME Fellow:
Beal Moore became a Fellow member at the Engineering Week Dinner
2-12-04. Congratulations to a grand stalwart of our Society.
ASME Gear from Lands’ End:
Lands’ End has replaced Corporate Express for purchasing ASME gear with
large quantity discounts. See http://www.asme.org/member/benefits/Index.html and scroll
down to Lands’ End.
Federal Government Fellowship Program:
ASME has established a program whereby members may become advisers to
Congress and the White House. Contact ASME headquarters for information.
Acteva Service made available by ASME:
ASME has arranged to have Acteva provide the ability to take online
registration and credit card payments for ASME programs. There is a nominal fee charged
for this service if we wish to use it.
Patent and Invention Program:
Patent attorney Richard Straussman expressed willingness to present a program
tailored to our interests. Karen issued a survey asking for preferences.
The response indicated the following interests:
- Overview of the Types of Intellectual Property: Patents, Trademarks, Copyright & Trade Secrets,
Similarities and differences.
- Patents: Utility and Design Protection
- Are you an inventor? How to know and what to do about it.
- Patent Pitfalls: What most engineers should rarely (if ever) do and why.
Now that we have the response, Karen will contact Mr. Straussman to arrange a program.
Tour of Kodalux in Fair Lawn, NJ:
Arnold Pristernik contacted George Audisio (audisio@qualexphoto.com).
Arnold will attempt to arrange a tour for the fall, possibly in September. Kodalux needs a
6-week advance notice. The tour would include photographic film printing,
paper processing, paper cutting, and packaging.
Aviation Museum in Teterboro program:
Beal Moore said he would contact the president of the Museum, Pat Reilly,
to confirm whether the one of the preferred dates is available for a program.
Sid Goodman said he assist Beal. The preferred dates are Saturday May 1st, 8th or 22nd, or Sunday May 2nd, or May 23rd. We would like the program to be
between one and three o’clock. Refreshments should be served. A nominal
admission fee will be required.
Engineering Week Dinner that was held on February 12, 2004:
Gregory T. Linteris PhD., our keynote speaker, gave a fascinating lecture
“Fire in Space”, based on his experience in space missions.
Karen is preparing applications for ASME reimbursement of presentation related
costs and the speaker’s expenses. We had to rent equipment to augment the lecture.
Students who received scholarships at the Dinner sent letters of appreciation.
Attendance was much lower than in the past. We hope to do better next time.
ASME Program on the Meadowlands that was held on Feb 21
Attendance was disappointing. Hugh Carola’s talk was cut short due
to unforeseen circumstances. We tried.
ASME Reorganization-Change and Continuity Initiative:
Karen Ohland and Lisa Laplante went to the conference in Storrs Connecticut at which
proposed changes were presented. They were under whelmed by the conference facility
and the presentation. Critical questions that were submitted were not answered. It was stated
that ASME officials would review the questions. Section meeting attendees expressed concern
that ASME has done little to address the crisis of job loss to overseas outsourcing.
The Continuity program seeks to make ASME an umbrella technical Society, especially
embracing overseas membership. It seeks to include all technical disciplines, not merely Mechanical
Engineering. A question asked at this Section meeting was, “Does this mean ASME will
become the Non-American Society of Non-Mechanical Engineers?”
Will this accelerate American job loss?
Engineers and pure scientists have different outlooks and different needs.
Are interests and needs of both groups compatible? Can ASME successfully be all things
to all groups? If the job-loss crisis caused by globalization is not adequately addressed by
ASME, why would American engineers want to retain membership?
Without American jobs, there will be no use for increased technical knowledge in the US.
Bud Foster said he will prepare a draft statement that addresses the concerns
of our Section Officers.
A personal comment by this Secretary after contemplating discussion at this Section Meeting follows.
US manufacturing employment has declined 16% in 3 years, according to the US Department of Labor.
Can we survive if our largest exports are jobs and the US dollar? Machine Design Magazine is presenting
a free web cast on 3-24-04 at 2pm Eastern Standard Time, addressing the question “Will All Manufacturing
Move Offshore”? I (Sid Goodman) sent an E-mail to Ron Kohl, the editor of Machine Design Magazine,
asking what can engineering societies do about it. To register for this web cast,
go to www.machinedesign.com/webcast324. I submitted a similar question to ASME
in answer to their appeal for comments on the proposed Initiative.
New ASME logo:
Karen passed out samples of the new logo.
