(She is recovering from a broken arm)

Next Section Meeting:

June 24, Thursday – 7:30pm
Kraft Headquarters
7 Campus Drive, Parsippany, NJ

Directions:
Route 287 to route 10 west, Exit 39B (if coming south).
Merge onto NJ 10 west. Take Dryden Way ramp toward Ridgedale Ave/Cedar Knolls.
Turn left onto Campus Drive.
Turn left right after Hilton Court. Parking lot for Kraft is there.

If coming east on NJ 10, take Dryden Way ramp and follow as above.

ASME Region II Administrative Conference (RAC):

May 14-16 at the Verkhovyna Mountain Resort in Glen Spry, NY.

Accommodations at the Conference were a disaster. Instead of getting the best rooms, as promised, the worst rooms were provided. There was no hot water in some rooms and no cold water either, except on the floor. Plumbers banged loudly through the night, and beds were like hammocks, except they sagged more uncomfortably than a hammock. The discussions about ASME Reorganization-Change and Continuity Initiative seemed to leave more questions than solutions. It is hoped that the targeted goals will be actuated better than arrangements for this conference.

Regional Student Conference April 24, 2004:

There was a high level of enthusiasm at this event. Participation was half of last year’s involvement. Some designs in the competition were not as successful as hoped. Iggy D’Agati, Karen Ohland, Lisa Laplante, and Richard Dolinsky were judges Dick Touma made the welcoming introductory speech.

Aviation Museum (Teterboro):

Program Event Scheduled for May 22, 2004
Beal Moore and Sid Goodman made arrangements for this event. Master Repro printed flyers for about one third of our members who do not have E-mail addresses. The cost to have this done was very reasonable. The printer addressed the flyers from addresses that were E-mailed to him and he used artwork that was also E-mailed to him. Announcements were E-mailed to the two thirds of our members who have E-mails. We will probably use this printer for the July Picnic.

Federal Government Fellowship Program:

ASME has established a program whereby members may become advisers to
Congress and the White House. Contact ASME headquarters for information.

Patent and Invention Program:

We will schedule this program for the fall. Although the Stevens Institute is interested in having a program at Stevens it is not possible to do it this spring. We would like to have the program in the late afternoon for students, serve supper, and then have an evening session. Serving a supper at Stevens is no problem.

Tour of Kodalux in Fair Lawn, NJ:

Arnold Pristernik contacted George Audisio (audisio@qualexphoto.com). Arnold will attempt to arrange a tour for the date of Wed. September 29. Kodalux needs a 6-week advance notice. The tour would include photographic film printing, paper processing, paper cutting, and packaging.

Program on Saving Money While Providing Clean Air:

Sid will ask Camfil Carr Corp if they are willing to present their expertise in filtering air with an effectiveness that saves energy costs while delivering a higher purity of air. Certain types of filters lose their efficiency very quickly, and produce high pressure losses which can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for some HVAC systems. We will try for an October program.

ASME celebration of 125th Anniversary – February, 2005:

Volunteer coordinators for E-week 2005 and the anniversary are sought from each Section. Please contact Karen at ohlandk@asme.org if you are interested in being either a volunteer coordinator or a volunteer.

Several events have been planned to be held at Stevens Institute in April, 2005 for the celebration. There will be a black tie dinner for 150 people at Stevens on April 7th. On April 8th, the Board of Governors will meet, after which there will be an event in the Stevens auditorium, but only half the stage will be available because the stage will have props on it for something else. They will outsource one half of a Rumanian orchestra made up of engineers, since more than half will not fit on the stage. Why they will outsource an orchestra from Rumania to play on half a stage, when there are plenty of engineers in NJ who have bands, like the one Arnold Pristernik is in, seems like the same kind of poor planning as was done for the disastrous RAC. On April 9th there will be a regional student competition. Members of the Board of Governors will be invited to serve as judges for the oral and paper competion (not the design competition)

Without involving us in the planning they expect us to sell lots of tickets and contribute $1000 towards the event. Richard Dolinsky will draft a response for the section for Karen to transmit. Richard commented that he could save them a great deal of money by holding the event at the Hanover Inn, and the idea of outsourcing foreign engineers for the event is a blow to NJ engineers, who are already beleaguered by outsourcing.

Solar Splash – an ASME Event – June 16-20:

ASME is looking for volunteers. If interested, contact Roberta Gorman.
phone: (212)591-7742, E-mail (gormanr@asme.org)

Treasurer’s Report:

No report at this meeting

Section Picnic for next summer:

Definitely scheduled for Saturday July 24th
Richard Dolinsky said he confirmed the 24th and he booked a rain date for August 14th. Richard will supply copy for a flyer for this event to Karen. We will undoubtedly used Master Repro again, as we did for the Aviation Day event. Swartzwood Park offers swimming, boating, and fishing. It has a concession stand. The Section will subsidize admission to the park for members and student members.

Date for Honors and Awards Dinner July 20th:

The dinner will be held at the Hanover Inn. Arnold Pristinik will send out invitations. We will subsidize one guest for each honoree. Widows of former Section Chairs will be invited to be our guests at the dinner. Details for dinner arrangements were finalized. The Dinner was initially planned for an earlier date. At the meeting, we discussed changing the date. Richard Dolinsky confirmed the July 20th date later.

Karen is running for ASME Regional VP:

Karen is traveling to San Diego for a June 6th appearance before the Nominating Committee. We agreed to subsidize a portion of her travel expenses for her interview.

Other Possible future programs:

  • Picatinny Arsenal – Bud Foster said he would ask people at the Arsenal if they were willing to present a program. No response yet.
  • Management/Consulting/Starting a business – Dick Touma will coordinate a discussion. Brian Boden (a manager at Kraft) and Iggy D’Agati (established a successful business) agreed to serve as panelists. No response yet.
  • Visit to Sterling Mine and wine tasting event. Lisa Laplante will look into planning this.
Art Vasky advised us that he has a new site for a day trip to the Stirling Hill Mine in Ogdensburg, NJ. A tour guide gives a 2.5 hour tour. There is an equipment museum before the mine tour and a mineral museum at the end of the tour. The person to contact at the mine is Robert Hauck at (973)209-7212. His address is 30 Plant St. Ogdensburg, NJ 07439.
  • Presentation by Glenn Corbett, revised construction specifications for high-rise buildings.
This suggested program is being kept on the agenda as a possible future event.

Objective For the Next Section Meeting:

Work out a strategy for the next year. Active participation by as many as can attend is urged.

Events in other Sections:

  • 2nd Fuel Cell Science, Engineering & Technology Conference, 6/14-16, 2004, Rochester, NY
