Possible change in meeting night:

We usually meet on the third Thursday of each month. Sid will poll those on our minutes distribution list if they would prefer to meet on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Monday between September, 2004 and June, 2005.

Karen Ohland is now a nominee for ASME Vice President Regional II:

Karen is our present Section Chair.

Election and nomination of new officers:

We need to elect or re-elect the following officers of the Section for a two-year term.
We must do this at the next Section meeting.
We need a Section Vice Chair to cover for Karen when she is away on regional or national Affairs.
Secretary of the Section - Sid Goodman has served for more than two years.
Bergen/Passaic Subsection Chair – Richard Dolinsky has served two years.

Please nominate someone or volunteer your own services.

Proposal to Attract and keep ASME Members:

Iggy D’Agati presented his proposal of 2005 Goals for ASME Regions II Sections. His proposal anticipates the possibility that a Regional structure of ASME may be dissolved, or it will be drastically changed.

An overview of his proposal is:

  • List engineers (either as individuals or as groups with a common interest), companies, and schools on our web site.
  • The listing will be a “who’s who”.
  • The listing will facilitate face to face meeting of engineers, to impart technical information, advice, encourage local sourcing rather than foreign-sourcing, assist in, talent searches, and assist job seekers find local employers.
  • Permission will be necessary to be listed.
  • Listing will cost a nominal fee.
  • Have meetings, seminars, workshops, or special events.

Iggy said he can e-mail several hundred engineers and ask if they would like to be listed, or if they would like to have their organization listed.

There was general agreement that Iggy’s proposal was excellent. A copy of his proposal follows.

2005 GOALS FOR ASME REGION II SECTIONS WITH OR WITHOUT A REGIONAL STRUCTURE - Iggy D'Agati

It is very likely that Sections in Region II must continue to function without the support of an ASME recognized or designated Region II Vice President and the usual funds supporting specific Region II events.
The Mid-Hudson/New York geographical area Sections have very unique present and future needs.
All members, seniors as well as student members must initiate new programs and become more proactive in their mission. The structure of ASME is going through severe changes, which may or may not provide the services we have all expected to continue as usual. All of us were introduced to the ASME Continuity and Change Phase II: Transition document at our last RAC at Glen Spey, NY this past May. What is obviously missing, deliberately by design from the document is the word "Region".
If we believe members in our area have a common interest or bond that must be preserved, then we must take bold steps to determine our own destiny in the new ASME structural changes.

After attending the summer annual meeting in June 2004, and some knowledge of the national agenda, I have some thoughts on what Region II members and sections can initiate that will prepare us for the designated change to take place in June 2005. At our RAC, there were major concerns about membership value and the trend of industry outsourcing many engineering jobs. A solution can be the creation of a networking program between members, entrepreneurs, local industry, ASME and the local schools. We must set up a database of "WHO'S WHO IN REGION II". Networking within ASME, members, local industry and local engineering schools is a way out of slowing down the outsourcing of our talents. The message to all of our local industrial enterprises, the Engineer, Product or Technical Service you may be looking for could be NEXT DOOR NOT OFFSHORE.
The database or networking system can be named "LETSGO"Local Engineering Talent Search Growth Operation.

Any member can have their individual name or local company's brief bio sketch, services, talent, specialties or product they manufacture. Posted on this web site will be E-mail address, location, phone, fax, website link or any pertinent data the member or industry would like to post on the website by written authorization. We can maintain the website with the help of ASME for an annual fee. If it is free, it will not have a value to sell. Renewal every year must be in writing or the website will be dropped. Payments will go to the sections within our Region who wish to participate in this networking system. I would suggest a higher fee for non-members and a reasonable higher fee for local industry. Services or product listed is not sanctioned or approved by ASME, use at your own risk!

Registered members can reinforce their networking not only electronically but could initiate monthly breakfasts or similar get together with face-to-face discussions. Programs can be developed to include local speakers on topics of common interest to all.

I suggest that at our next ROB or at the immediate future section meetings, we could introduce the idea of this program for Region II. We ask for volunteers to create a task force of 5 or 6 members familiar with setting up websites (i.e. John Melin, student section members) and outline a plan for our Region. The emphasis should be on the ASME MISSING MEMBERS FROM THE GREATEST GENERATION TO THE LOST GENERATION 25 YEAR TO 45 YEAR OLD NON-MEMBER ENGINEERS MOTTO-----"LETSGO"

Seed funding can be obtained from ASME under the new structure to start up a new community or new group providing a specific service to our local members. The database gives us a local exchange and interaction between members, students, industry and local schools in one specific source.
Ultimately, we can promote this program in our Region II website, section newsletters, local TV cable, local newspapers, local towns chamber of commerce, local schools or many other possible advertisements.

Regarding the possibility of no longer ASME funding of future RACs or ROBs. Our local sections must be prepared to either accept it or find ways to continue these activities without the support of ASME funding. We may be expected to raise funds on our own if we wish to have our traditional events.

Objective For the Next Section Meeting:

Think about the points outlined above. Come to the next meeting with practical suggestions for this or other future planning. Also, discuss the election of officers for the new fiscal year.

Program on Least Lifetime Cost of Filtered Air in HVAC systems:

Sid asked Armando Brunetti, top executive at Camfil Carr, Inc. (Riverdale, NJ) if Camfil Farr is willing to present a seminar on filtering air at least overall cost while delivering a higher purity of air.
Inappropriate filters lose their efficiency very quickly, and needlessly inflict many thousands of dollars a year in costs for large HVAC systems. The cost of an air filter is tiny compared to overall operating costs.
Sid asked for an October program. Sid said (at the Section Meeting) if his supervisor, who is a super expert on the subject, is unavailable, Sid can deliver a presentation. Sid is presently supervisor of the R&D Lab at Camfil Carr.

Patent and Invention Program:

Karen said we will schedule this program for the fall.

Tour of Kodalux in Fair Lawn, NJ:

Arnold Pristernik will attempt to schedule a Tour for the date of Wed. September 29. The tour would include photographic film printing, paper processing, paper cutting, and packaging.

ASME celebration of 125th Anniversary: – February, 2005

Volunteer coordinators for E-week 2005 and the anniversary are sought from each Section. Please contact Karen at ohlandk@asme.org if you are interested in being either a volunteer coordinator or a volunteer.

As for contributing $1000 to headquarters, and selling tickets for a celebration that will feature bringing in musicians from overseas, the Section cannot and will not contribute.

Treasurer’s Report:

No report at this meeting

Section Picnic:

Date switched to Saturday August 14th at Swartzwood Park.
Swartzwood Park offers swimming, boating, and fishing. It has a concession stand. The Section will subsidize admission to the park for members and guests.
Due to problems with internet access to membership addresses, and the delay in notification of the event, the date was changed to August 19th. Karen will have flyers mailed out to all members, and have e-mails sent to those who are on the e-mail list. Richard Dolinsky will notify the park of our date change, and will hopefully get credit on deposit for a new rain date.

Date for Honors and Awards Dinner July 20th:

The dinner will be held at the Hanover Inn.
Arnold Pristinik has mailed invitations to honorees.
Each honoree may bring one guest.
Widows of former Section Chairs are invited.
As of this section meeting, Arnold tallied a count of 37 participants.

Other Possible future programs:

  • Picatinny Arsenal
Bud Foster said he would ask people at the Arsenal if they were willing to present a program. No response yet.
  • Management/Consulting/Starting a business
Dick Touma will coordinate a discussion.  Brian Boden (a manager at Kraft) and Iggy D’Agati (established a successful business) agreed to serve as panelists. Iggy stated (at this Section Meeting) that he will contact the mentioned three-some to kick off planning for such an event.
  • Visit to Sterling Mine and wine tasting event.
Lisa Laplante will look into planning this.
Art Vasky advised us that he has a new site for a day trip to the Sterling Hill Mine in Ogdensburg, NJ. A tour guide gives a 2.5-hour tour. There is an equipment museum before the mine tour and a mineral museum at the end of the tour. The person to contact at the mine is Robert Hauck at 973-209-7212. His address is 30 Plant St. Ogdensburg, NJ 07439.
  • Presentation by Glenn Corbett, revised construction specifications for high-rise buildings
This suggested program is being kept on the agenda as a possible future event.

Upcoming Student Events:

  • October 16, 2004-Student Leadership Seminar, at Hofstra University, LI. (Students in Region II may contact our field office for information.)
  • September 18, 2004 - Student Leadership Seminar in Puerto Rico (for Region II students in Puerto Rico).
  • April 9, 2005 – Regional Student competition, at Stevens Institute, Hoboken, NJ.
  • Federal Government Fellowship Program
ASME has established a program whereby members may become advisers to Congress and the White House. Contact ASME headquarters for information.
