Tour of Kodalux in Fair Lawn, NJ:
Arnold Pristernik will ask Kodalux if we can schedule a tour
on approximately September 29th. The
tour would include photographic film printing, paper processing, paper
cutting, and packaging.
Program on Starting a Small Business:
Lisa Laplante, who has started a small successful business,
offers to present a panel discussion on
this topic, either December 1st or
2nd. It is proposed that this
program will be given at NJIT. The
program will include presentations followed by a question and answer
session. Lisa and Iggy agreed
to serve on the panel.
It was suggested that we attempt to include a panelist
from the Small Business Administration.

given several presentations.
He offers to give us a lecture.
Karen will ask if he will be available to provide a program in March,
2005.
Engineering Week Dinner,
2005:
It was agreed that we should plan to schedule the dinner for
Feburary 24. Iggy said he will find out if a speaker from “Engineers
Without Borders” would be available to give a keynote address.
ASME Distinguished Lecturer- Ian M. Arbon:
Karen will inquire if Mr. Arbon would be available for a
lecture in May. His subject is renewable energy and sustainability.
Holiday Dinner Meeting in December:
It was proposed that we hold our annual holiday dinner at the
Hanover Manor on December 9th, and include Honors and Awards at this dinner.
Karen will inquire whether the Manor will be available for this date.
Election and nomination of new officers:
We need to elect or re-elect the following officers of the
Section for a two-year term:
(We must do this at the next Section meeting.)
-
We need a Section Vice Chair to cover for Karen when she is
away on regional or national affairs.
-
Secretary of the Section - Sid Goodman has served for more
than two years.
-
Bergen/Passaic Subsection Chair – Richard Dolinsky has
served two years.
Please nominate someone or volunteer your own services.
Proposal to Attract and keep ASME Members:
At the last meeting, Iggy D’Agati presented his proposal of
2005 Goals for ASME Regions II Sections.
His proposal anticipates the possibility that a Regional
structure of ASME may be dissolved, or it will be drastically changed.
An overview of his proposal is that in the event of Section
dissolution…
-
List engineers (either as individuals or as groups with a
common interest), companies, and schools on our web site.
-
The listing will be a “who’s who”.
-
The listing will facilitate face to face meeting of
engineers, to impart technical information, advice, encourage local
sourcing rather than foreign-sourcing, assist in, talent searches, and
assist job seekers find local employers.
-
Permission will be necessary to be listed.
-
Listing will cost a nominal fee.
-
Have meetings, seminars, workshops, or special events.
Iggy said he can e-mail several hundred engineers and ask if
they would like to be listed, or if they would like to have their
organization listed.
There was general agreement that Iggy’s proposal was
excellent. See the minutes of
the last meeting for a copy of his proposal.
Rather than discussing this proposal, Dick Touma and Iggy
suggested that Karen petition Norris Allman, on behalf of the Section, to
refrain from abolishing Sections and to refrain from abolishing programs
that have proved valuable to members and student members. Their
suggestion was unanimously approved by the executive committee. We
agreed that a copy of this petition should be sent to all Section chairs in
Region II and ask them to submit the same or a similar resolution.
Iggy and Dick, after long experience at all levels of leadership in ASME,
explained why some proposed changes are ill advised.
The resolution is "The North Jersey
Section opposes the Society's proposed moved towards elimination of national
geographic representation and the elimination of what are now regional
activities for students and senior members."
ASME celebration of 125th Anniversary – February,
2005:
Volunteer coordinators for E-week 2005 and the anniversary
are sought from each Section. Please contact Karen at ohlandk@asme.org
