Next Section Meeting November 23, Tuesday – 7:30pm

At Kraft Foods
Eagle Building
100 DeForest Avenue
East Hanover, NJ 07936

Campus is on the NW corner of River Road and De Forest Ave, about a mile north (up River Road) of route 10.
You must use the parking lot entrance that is off River Road,
not the the DeForest Ave. parking lot entrance.

Directions:
Westbound route 10: Right onto River Road.  Go approx. 1 mile through

intersection/traffic light at DeForest Ave. then left into Kraft entrance on River Road.

Eastbound route 10: No left turn onto River Road.  So either…
…If at River Road, go past it, make a U-turn, come back on route 10 West and follow Westbound directions on route 10 above.
…Or, If coming from route I-287, take route 10 east.  From the right lane, make right turn into jug-handle for left turn onto Algonquin Parkway north (P.C. Richards on right).  Go approx. ¼ mile.
Next, right onto Melanie Lane. At end (T) turn left onto Ridgedale Ave. North.  Pass electrical switching station and cemetery.
At next traffic light, right onto De Forest Ave.  At next
traffic light, left onto River Road north, then left into Kraft.
…Or, make a right turn into River Road off route 10.  Make a U-turn and then cross route 10 to the parking lot entrance.

From North I-280:
…Take exit 4 (Eisenhower Pkwy south).  Go south. At traffic light, make right onto Eagle Rock Road west.  Go approx. 1 mile. Left at traffic light onto River Road south.  Go approx 1 mile.
Turn right into Kraft.

Within the campus: Room is in the “Eagle Building”, not the Tech Center.  After entering via the River Road gate, turn right onto the perimeter road around the campus.  Go a short distance,  and in the left curve, turn left into the parking lot.  In the lot, turn right to go to the lower parking lot and park.  Enter the building at the same level via the door in the roofed parking area.  Check in with Security (bear left after entering building).   The building security contact for this night is group leader Bob Sullivan.

Program on Least Lifetime Cost of Filtered Air in HVAC systems

Sid was asked to find out if  a date may be available for Don Thornburg to speak, in February or March, 2005.  Don is a filter expert at Camfil Carr, Inc. (Riverdale, NJ).  The following dates are to be avoided.
February 9th and  21st and the last two weeks in March.

Consider Programs for New/Early Career Engineers or Outreach to Engineering Societies

Think about  programs for early career engineers and those who work in pharmaceutical companies.
Karen suggested we invite other engineering societies to participate in joint programs such as a
program on patents. She asked us to think about how we can contact societies such as ASHRAE, SAE, and the American Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers.

Patent and Invention Program

North Jersey Alumni president for Stevens Institute, James Litvany, LDI, was asked if a date during the last week in January could be firmed up.  Stevens is eager to have the program there.  James said there parking is available or can be arranged.

Program on Starting a Small Business

Lisa Laplante, will follow up with Iggy, and Brian Boden.

Sterling Mine Program

Lisa arranged a visit to the mine by ASME members and guests on September 25th.
Twenty one people attended, including 5 youngsters under 18.
The group enjoyed the visit.

Habitat for Humanity Program

There will be an event on November 27th.
Check the Habitat’s web site.
Contact Lisa if you wish to participate. (Lisa Laplante llaplant@nji.com)

Picatinny Arsenal Program

Bud Foster reported that a tour of the firing range could only be arranged on a week day between 6 am and 4 pm.  However,  the Section would have to pay the Arsenal $200 for a guide.  The  executive committee expressed dismay that we were asked to pay a fee.  In the past, representatives of ASME supported the Arsenal when there were proposals to close it down.
We did not make a firm decision about pursuing the firing range proposal.

Talk on New Engineering by Eugene F. Adiutori

Engineer Adiutori has written a book on this subject and has given several presentations.
He offers to give us a lecture.  Karen e-mailed him asking if he will be available to provide a program in March, 2005.  He has not replied.  She will follow up.

Engineering Week Dinner,  2005

It was agreed that we should plan to schedule the dinner for Feburary 24.  Iggy has been trying  to obtain a keynote speaker from  Engineers Without Borders (EWB). EWB is partnering with ASME for Engineering Week.  So far, Iggy  was only able to contact a student group that is affiliated with EWB.

ASME Distinguished Lecturer- Ian M. Arbon

Karen e-mailed Mr. Arbon, asking if he  would be available for a lecture in May, 2005.
His subject is renewable energy and sustainability. He has not replied.
Karen said she will follow up.

Holiday Dinner Meeting in December

It was initially proposed to hold our annual holiday dinner at the Hanover Manor on December 9th, and include Honors and Awards at this dinner.
However, this date conflicts with the Jewish holiday of Hanukka.  Richard Dolinsky will inquire whether the Manor will be available during the first week in January.

Election and nomination of new officers

Karen will issue a call for nominations to our members.
We need to elect or re-elect the following officers of the Section for a two-year term.
We must do this at the next Section meeting.
We need a Section Vice Chair to cover for Karen when she is away on regional or national Affairs.
Secretary of the Section - Sid Goodman has served for more than two years.
Bergen/Passaic Subsection Chair – Richard Dolinsky has served two years.

- Please nominate someone or volunteer your own services.  -

Request to honor an Eagle Scout

Karen received a request for a representative from ASME to attend a Court of Honor for an eagle scout on October 17 in Denville, NJ.  This scout completed a public service project, and wants to become an engineerBud Foster volunteered to present a certificate of commendation from ASME to the Scout.  The problem is that headquarters did not furnish the certificate.  Karen said she will follow up with headquarters. The executive committee felt that we still should present a certificate belatedly.

ASME celebration of 125th Anniversary –  2005

Volunteer coordinators for E-week 2005 and the anniversary are sought from each Section.
Please contact Karen at ohlandk@asme.org if you are interested in being either a volunteer coordinator or a volunteer.

Treasurer’s Report

No report at this meeting.

Federal Government Fellowship Program

ASME has established a program whereby members may become advisers to Congress and the White House.  Contact ASME headquarters for information.

Possible Wine Tasting Program

Lisa Laplante has been trying to arrange a program, but all the locations where this might be planned are too far away. James Litvany suggested that the Cricket Hill Brewery hosts tours of their beer factory from 6 to 8 pm on Fridays.
They give free samples and sell beer to visitors.

New Organizational Chart for ASME

Karen outlined a rough draft of the organizational chart for ASME’s new continuity and change program.  The organizational structure has not been firmed up yet.
It seems that another layer of bureaucracy has been proposed.

October 16, 2004-Student Leadership Seminar, at Hofstra University, LI.

30 students attended.  The program covered resume writing, interviewing techniques, making the transition from school to the work force.  A talk about the development of  fighter aircraft was given.
