Program on Least Lifetime Cost of Filtered Air in HVAC systems:

Dr. Boris Khusid would like to arrange a program at NJIT in February or March.  He wants to coordinate attendance of students and faculty from NJIT, and from Stevens Institute. Dr. Khusid won’t know which nights he will be teaching until the teaching schedule for the spring term is determined. Once that is known, we will be able to coordinate this with the availability of filter expert Don Thornburg, Manager of Research at Camfil Farr, Inc. (Riverdale, NJ). The following dates are to be avoided. February 9th and 21st and the last two weeks in March.

Consider Programs for New/Early Career Engineers or Outreach to Engineering Societies:

Think about programs for early career engineers and those who work in pharmaceutical companies.
Karen suggested we invite other engineering societies to participate in joint programs such as a program on patents. She asked us to think about how we can contact societies such as ASHRAE, SAE, and the American Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers.

Patent and Invention Program:

North Jersey Alumni president for Stevens Institute, James Litvany, LDI thinks that a date can be firmed up by the end of next week. The program will probably be held during the last two weeks of January.

Program on Starting a Small Business:

Lisa Laplante expects that her business workload will taper off enough to allow planning a program with Iggy D’Agati and Brian Boden.

Habitat for Humanity Program:

There will be an event on November 27th. Lisa Laplante has been coordinating participation.

Talk on New Engineering by Eugene F. Adiutori:

Engineer Adiutori has written a book on this subject and has given several presentations.
He offers to give us a lecture. Karen e-mailed him asking if he will be available to provide a program in March 2005. He has not replied. If he does reply, we will consider a date that is other than March.

Engineering Week Dinner, 2005:

We are scheduling the dinner for February 24. An invitation has been sent to the tentative keynote speaker, Dr. Yusef Mehta. He is a professor at Rowan University and a member of Engineers Without Borders. Engineers Without Borders arranges student projects.  We are waiting for his confirmation.

ASME Distinguished Lecturer- Ian M. Arbon:

Karen e-mailed Mr. Arbon, asking if he would be available for a lecture in May 2005.  His subject is renewable energy and sustainability. He has replied. Because he travels from England, he wants a tour of appearances for more than one Section.  Karen said she would post an inquiry of interest.

Honors and Awards Dinner:

It was decided to hold the dinner at the Hanover Manor during the week of March 13th.  Richard Dolinsky will check availability of the Manor. Earlier dates are impractical.

Election and nomination of new officers:

Karen will issue a call for nominations to our members.
We need to elect or re-elect the following officers of the Section for a two-year term.
We must do this at the next Section meeting.
We need a Section Vice Chair to cover for Karen when she is away on regional or national Affairs.
Secretary of the Section - Sid Goodman has served for more than two years.
Bergen/Passaic Subsection Chair – Richard Dolinsky has served two years.

Please nominate someone or volunteer your own services.

ASME celebration of 125th Anniversary – 2005:

Volunteer coordinators for E-week 2005 and the anniversary are sought from each Section.  Please contact Karen at ohlandk@asme.org if you are interested in being either a volunteer coordinator or a volunteer.

Treasurer’s Report:

No report at this meeting.

Federal Government Fellowship Program:

ASME has established a program whereby members may become advisers to Congress and the White House. Contact ASME headquarters for information.

Possible Wine/Beer Tasting Program:

Lisa Laplante will try to arrange a program. The Cricket Hill Brewery hosts tours of their beer factory from 6 to 8 pm on Fridays. They give free samples and sell beer to visitors.

New Organizational Changes for ASME:

The proposed organizational changes are on the website www.asme.org/change.
The new organization will have fewer vice presidents. This will enable better communication. The present structure, has 38 technical divisions, with not enough programs that is local to members. Non-local meetings are costly to members as well as to the Society.

Reports from the IMECE conference indicate a net loss in dues paying members.
There is a generation gap. Members between the ages of 25 to 45 are largely missing.
Without changes, the operating fund of ASME will be exhausted within a few years.

Karen Ohland and Iggy D’Agati are on a committee that is reviewing the alternative to 38 technical divisions. It is a Geographic Structure that will bring programs to local districts.

Karen and Iggy invite feedback on the charts (in www.asme.org\change), which define Geographic Structure, Technical Units Task Force, and Senior Sections.
The charts outline membership needs being met and membership needs not being met.  Copies of these charts are attached to these minutes.

Which proposed changes do you agree with? Tell Karen and Iggy.

The leadership and development program will be continued. Anyone interested in this program may contact leonardw@asme.org.

Upcoming Events:

April 9, 2005 – Regional Student competition, at Stevens Institute, Hoboken, NJ.

April 22-25, 2005 – Regional Student Leadership Seminar/ Regional Operating Board Meeting and the Regional Administrative Conference in Puerto Rico.
Dr. James Yardley, Director of the Nano-Science Center at Columbia University will present the program.
“Nano-Science – Past, Present & Future”. Details will follow.
