Program on Filtered Air in HVAC systems:
Dr. Boris Khusid asked for a date on which the speaker will be available.
He asked for a description of the presentation. He will coordinate attendance of students and faculty from
NJIT, and from Stevens Institute.
Subsequent to this Section Meeting, Don
Thornburg, established March 17 as the date he is available to make the presentation at
NJIT.
A description of the program is as follows:
ASME Program – Air Filtration - Are you getting what you are paying for?
The air is a cesspool of invisible particles. Most of these particles are smaller
than 0.30 microns. It has recently been reported that immense numbers of people
suffer and perish from continued exposure to them (Ref. American Lung Association).
A good quality air cleaning device (filter) can remove most of these particles,
but only if the particle removal efficiency of the device is maintained.
Many filters sold to users lose their "test report" efficiency very quickly when
used in their intended applications. These filters show very good performance
when tested per the current industry standard test method, ASHRAE 52.2.1999.
This method does not reveal the quick loss of efficiency exhibited by some filters sold
in the most dangerous particle size ranges. Currently the ASHRAE standard is in the
process of being revised to better show the "real life" performance of filtration devices, but the revision is being fought by segments of the industry, which
supply the current "problem" materials.
Relying on the present standard exclusively can result in many trillions of very fine
particulate passing through the filtration system and into your lungs, instead of being
captured by the HVAC system as intended. Don Thornburg, Manager of Research
and Development for Camfil Farr Inc. will give a lecture on effectively coping with
these problems. His presentation will include a means to analyze the complete
lifetime cost of meeting filtration requirements.
Engineering Week Dinner, 2005:
The dinner is scheduled for February 24. Student awards will be given as well as Engineer of the Year awards.
Lisa Laplante is sending out letters to companies asking them to select their Engineer of the Year. Boris Khusid
received the recommendation of three NJIT students for an award. He has not yet received a recommendation
from the Stevens Institute. The dinner will be held at the Hanover Manor, 16 Eagle Rock Road, East Hanover, NJ 07936.
Intellectual Property Program:
Scheduled for January 26th at Stevens Institute.
Topics covered will be patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights. Registration is requested.

North Jersey Club) james.litvany@dnps.com
or james@litvany.com.
James Litvany, LDI said he will try to arrange parking passes. He will ask Susan Lavigne to send out
an announcement by e-mail with a parking pass. He hopes to have parking passes available at
the security desk as well as have them attached to the mentioned e-mail notice. He is arranging
funding of refreshments. Refreshments will be served at 5:00 pm. Refreshments will consist of
pizza. water, soda, and perhaps cookies. The program will start at 6:00 pm.
Professor Prasad is coordinating the event with attorney Richard Straussman.

Lisa Laplante will plan a program with Iggy D’Agati and Brian
Boden.
Talk on New Engineering by Eugene F. Adiutori:
Engineer Adiutori has written a book on this subject and has given several presentations.
Karen e-mailed him asking if he will be available to provide a program. He has not replied.
ASME Distinguished Lecturer- Ian M. Arbon:
Karen e-mailed Mr.
Arbon, asking if he would be available for a lecture.
His subject is renewable energy and sustainability. Because he is traveling from England,
he needs a tour of appearances, not just a presentation at one Section. Karen e-mailed
an inquiry of interest to other Sections.
Honors and Awards Dinner Rescheduled:
The Honors and Awards Dinner has been rescheduled for March 15th at
the Hanover Manor. Attendance is by invitation. Richard Dolinsky phoned the Hanover Manor from the Section Meeting to confirm this change of date.

On April 20th there will be a “Rebuilding Together” program. Lisa Laplante would like to have
ASME members participate. If interested, contact her at llaplant@nji.com.
