ASME
Diversity and Outreach Program
Last November, ASME’s Board on Diversity and
Outreach (BDO) gave more than $22,000 to universities and engineering
schools, to encourage more minorities and women to become active in ASME
and in the engineering community. The amounts dispersed varied between
$500 and $1500. These allocations were not made by individual
Sections. Individual Sections such as the North Jersey Section have
awarded funds to students who were actively involved in ASME Student
Sections.
Intellectual Property Program – Held January 26th at Stevens
Institute.
Topics
covered were patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights. The
program went well. 30 to 35 attendees were there. The patent attorney
said he is willing to provide a follow up meeting or give advice to
engineers or students who are interested in employment in this field.
Research positions exist and are said to pay well. James Litvany
organized this event.

Program on Starting a Small Business
Lisa Laplante will plan a program with Iggy
D’Agati and Brian Boden, and Richard Touma. She will speak to these men
at the Engineering Week Dinner about actualization.
Talk on New
Engineering by Eugene F. Adiutori
Engineer Adiutori has written a book on this
subject and has given several presentations. He requires guarantee of a
reasonably good attendance. Professor Mel Lewis said that FDU is
looking for a lecturer. Mel was given a description of the proposed
program and may possibly arrange for a very good attendance at an
upcoming FDU conference.
ASME
Distinguished Lecturer- Ian M. Arbon
Karen
e-mailed Mr. Arbon, asking if he would be available for a lecture.
His subject is renewable energy and sustainability. Because he is
traveling from England, he needs a tour of appearances, not just a
presentation at one Section. Karen emailed an inquiry of interest to
other Sections. She said that other Sections are interested.
Honors and
Awards Dinner Rescheduled Again
The
Honors and Awards Dinner has been rescheduled for May 6th.
Arnold Pristernik is arranging this event, which is by invitation only.

Election
and nomination of new officers
Karen will issue a call for nominations to our
members.
We need to elect or re-elect the following officers of the Section for a
two-year term.
We must do this at the next Section meeting.
We

regional or national
affairs.

Please nominate someone or volunteer your own services.
ASME

New
requirements for passing the Engineer In Training test, leading to a PE
license.
Professor Mel Lewis, coordinator of the
Engineering Technology Program at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU)
said that FDU presently gives courses appropriate for NY State
requirements for continuing education for PE License renewal. He said
that NJ will probably also require courses in continuing education for
License renewal. He said that mechanical engineering courses for
passing the Engineer in Training Test or passing the PE license could be
developed by FDU.
