A copy of the flyer and directions is at the end of these minutes.

Engineering Week Dinner, 2005:

The dinner was held on March 10 at the Hanover Manor, 16 Eagle Rock Road, East Hanover, NJ 07936.

  • Good turnout, considering the original date was rescheduled due to a snowstorm.

  • Good food with an interesting speaker. The speaker was a student from Engineers Without Borders.
He was an engineering leader for a water resource survey and project in Honduras. He was also in a water project in Thailand.

  • …AIAA engineers who reserved could not attend because of the changed date of the dinner. No payment was received from AIAA students who were able to attend. They were told that they would not need to pay. As a result we had a shortfall in anticipated money to cover our expenses.

Program on Starting a Small Business:

Lisa Laplante will plan a program with Iggy D’Agati and Brian Boden, and Richard Touma. She will try to schedule a program in May.

ASME Distinguished Lecturer - Ian M. Arbon:

His subject is renewable energy and sustainability. He emailed several possible dates for the program to Karen.
The date is to be determined after reviewing available flights from England to the USA.

Honors and Awards Dinner Rescheduled Again (May 12th not May 6th)

The Honors and Awards Dinner has been rescheduled for May 12th.
Arnold Pristernik is arranging this event, which is by invitation only.
At the Engineering Week Dinner the Hanover Inn said that May 6th is not available.

Rebuilding Together:

On April 30th there will be a “Rebuilding Together” program. Lisa Laplante would like to have ASME members participate. If interested, contact her at llaplant@nji.com

Election and nomination of new officers:

Karen will issue a call for nominations to our members.

We need to elect or re-elect the following officers of the Section for a two-year term.
We must do this at the next Section meeting.
We need a Section Vice Chair to cover for Karen when she is away on regional or national Affairs.
Secretary of the Section - Sid Goodman has served for more than two years.
Bergen/Passaic Subsection Chair – Richard Dolinsky has served two years.

Please nominate someone or volunteer your own services.

ASME celebration of 125th Anniversary – 2005

Volunteer coordinators for E-week 2005 and the anniversary are sought from each Section.
Please contact Karen at ohlandk@asme.org if you are interested in being either a volunteer coordinator or a volunteer.

Treasurer’s Report:

ASME headquarters gave the Section (subsections included) approximately $6,000 for operating expenses rather than the expected amount of about $8,000.

Possible Program at the Morris Museum:

Bud Foster said he will visit the museum to provide an opinion on whether a Section visit there would be worthwhile.

Proposed Nanotechnology or Biotechnology seminar program canceled.

Boris Khusid reported that ASME Region II is unable to fund the program proposed for the University of Pennsylvania. The program would require a subsidy of approximately $1500.

New requirements for passing the Engineer In Training test, leading to a PE license:

Professor Mel Lewis, coordinator of the Engineering Technology Program at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) said that FDU presently gives courses appropriate for NY State requirements for continuing education for PE License renewal.
He said that NJ will probably also require courses in continuing education for License renewal.  He said that mechanical engineering courses for passing the Engineer in Training Test or passing the PE license could be developed by FDU.

Energy Program?:

Truth about the NJ Energy Crisis. Energy Awareness –Petroleum, Art Vatsky, energy consultant, offered to present a talk. We await specifics.

Wine/Beer Tasting Program: – to be rescheduled.

The Cricket Hill Brewery hosts tours of their beer factory from 6 to 8 pm on Fridays.
They give free samples and sell beer to visitors. Registration not required. Bringing a business card is requested. Lisa will check to see if it can be held on April 29th or May 6th.
Directions might be given on the website which also has the address: www.cricketbrewery.com

To get there, take Route 46 West to Fairfield Foad. The Brewery is at 24 Kulick road, 2 blocks east of Law Drive, which is where the ASME Service Center is located.

If the event goes well, Lisa may schedule another tasting program to involve the technical divisions of ASME.
