The
meetings listed above were established.
Some
preliminary ideas for discussion at the brainstorming meeting are
attached to these minutes.
Phone lists
will be distributed amongst the executive committee.
Direct contact of potential active members will be called, inviting them
to attend the meetings.
E-mails were
sent out inviting participation at a beer tasting and networking session
at the Cricket Hill Brewery for the evening of September 30. 6:00 to
8:30 pm, 24 Kulick Ave. , Fairfield, NJ.
Richard said
he will look into arranging future Section meetings at the ASME field
office, because it is at the the centroid of membership home addresses.
Karen and Lisa
are looking into planning a meeting on wine making.
Karen reported
that our CD account has been transferred to our checking account and all
the Section and Sub-Section reports have been submitted to headquarters
for the past fiscal year.
Art Vasky, a
consultant on alternative energy fuels, will be lecturing at Rutgers
University with author John Dolce on November 9. The program is for
automotive fleet managers.
Art is willing to provide a lecture for our section on the historical
perspective of energy for engineers. He mentioned that oil costs the
Saudis about $3/barrel to produce but they charge approximately
$67/barrel.
Art said he
will look into arranging a behind the scenes tour of the Thomas Edison
laboratory and also a tour of a bio-diesel factory in Newark.
There was a
consensus that future meetings should include food, that is either
brought-in (pizzas, sandwiches) or enjoyed in a restaurant dinner
meeting.
There will be
a Regional Student Leader Seminar (RSLS) in Puerto Rico at Turabo
University, October 1.
Lisa, Iggy, Karen, will go there with the lead trainer Ed. Ecock.
There will be
another RSLS at Stoney Brook University, Long Island on October 8.
After this
meeting, Art Reported the following.
All: I checked
on two of the four suggestions I made for events.
Here is the status:
-
Edison
Historic Site. Not to be open until some time in 2006. I have an
inquiry in to get more detailed information. I nornally get a
response from the site superintendent.
-
Biodiesel
Plant in Newark. We are OK to go but need to suggest a few dates.
Do we want weekday or weekend? Daytime, I guess. This is a mostly
outdoor operation and they sometimes run Saturdays to keep up with
demand.
-
I can
speak at a dinner meeting on the US petroleum Energy Situation.
This will be an update of a talk I gave about a year ago. It was an
estimate out to 2008.
So far, don't think I am too far off. I would need a projecor for
the the computer slides.
-
As far as
getting a FEMA speaker, I was not kidding. FEMA must have some
spokespeople that can tell us about precautions they take in the
NY/NJ area. This would also be a good dinner meeting as people would
want to know. Based on recent events, New Orleans and Bali, there
seems to be little hope in preventing an attack (human or natural)
but there is still a need to respond to them when they come. What
can we do? We can't escape as the roads will clog up.
The worst case
must be the dirty nuclear bomb. How do we respond to that? Our
frustration in Iraq says than an indifferent population is a real help
to terorists. Are we indifferent? I think we are.
Constant vigilance is impossible to maintain. Its boring. What can we
do?
Back before
Homeland Security, there was Civil Defense.
Civil Defense had "Duck and Cover" practice and thousands of fallout
shelters.
What does Homeland Security have?
